WHEELING – Glenville State could not overcome a strong second half from Wheeling University Wednesday night, falling to the Cardinals 92-83 on the road in MEC Men's Basketball action.
GSC produced a strong first half, building their lead to as high as 17 points, boasting an advantage of 43-26 late in the half. Wheeling was able to chip away, trimming the deficit to 46-37 by intermission. Glenville was sizzling from beyond the arc early, connecting on eight three-pointers in the opening half.
Wheeling opened the second half with a 27-9 run, gaining a 64-55 lead with 11:26 remaining in the contest. GSC would get the margin back to six, but could not get closer down the stretch.
John Williams JR. led the Pioneer attack, pouring in a game-high 33 points, and a game-high 14 rebounds. He was complemented
Nick Edwards with 13 points, and
Matthew Allman 11. Edwards delivered a team-high eight assists and also added six rebounds. GSC led in team rebounding 39-33. The Pioneers ended the evening with 15 made threes.
Wheeling was led by Jordan Reid with 27 points, and Jarett Haines with 24.
Glenville falls to 5-5 overall with the loss, and 2-4 in the Mountain East Conference. Wheeling improves to 4-9 overall, and 3-4 in the MEC.
GSC returns home Saturday, hosting West Liberty at the Waco Center.
