Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State's Football team is set to host the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus this Saturday for Homecoming. Saturday marks the seventh meeting between the Pioneers and Battlers since 2015. Both teams will be fighting for the I-79 Barrel Classic trophy.
A look at Alderson Broaddus
Alderson Broaddus is coming off a defeat to Fairmont State 51-7. The Battlers enter with a (0-6) overall record and (0-5) in the Mountain East Conference. AB is coached by Travis Everhart who enters his third season under the helm. So far this season the Batlers' offense is averaging 231 yards per game while opponents are averaging 462 yards. Alderson Broaddus's offense this season has been led by their passing game. Sophomore Dawson Skinner has a team-high in passing yards with 595 and seven touchdowns. Skinner's favorite target for the 2022 campaign has been Marvin Sims. Sims is third in the MEC in receiving yards with 524. Defensively, Michael Schwein has been the leading tackler for AB with 46 tackles. Junior defensive back Tony Caldwell leads the Battlers' pass defense. So far this season Caldwell has produced two interceptions and two pass breakups.Â
A look at the Pioneers
The Pioneers are coming off a heartbreaking loss to the University of Charleston 41-34. Quarterback
Anthony Garrett in his collegiate debut threw for 343 yards and one touchdown. Once again wide receiver
Javian Bellamy produced over 100 receiving yards. Bellamy has accomplished this feat three times this season. Currently, he is ranked 17th in the nation in receiving yards and second in the conference. As a team, the Pioneers are ranked 15th in the nation in total offense. Glenville's offensive line led by
Ian Pomeroy is only allowing 1.1 sacks per game.
Seth Arnold leads the Pioneers in tackles this season with 89. Defensive backs Shuan Sterling and
Brandon Penn have been key contributors to Glenville's pass defense. During the 2022 season, Sterling has accounted for 58 tackles, two interceptions, and four pass breakups. Through six games Penn has produced 51 tackles, seven interceptions, and six pass breakups.
