Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State University Football is back in action this weekend hosting West Virginia State University. The Pioneers are 0-5 in the last five matchups against the Yellow Jackets. Every contest during this stretch has been decided by two or fewer possessions. Glenville sits one game behind West Virginia State in the Mountain East Conference standings.
A Look at West Virginia State
West Virginia State enters the contest with a (5-3) overall record and (4-3) in the MEC. The Yellow Jackets are coached by John Pennington. Pennington enters his sixth season as head coach. Coach Pennington has produced a record of (32-24) overall at WVSU.Â
The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 56-38 victory over Concord University. Donovan Riddick threw for five touchdowns and 402 yards. So far this Season Riddick has accounted for 16 touchdowns which is third in the MEC. Riddick is also third in the conference in passing yards with 1,741. WV State's top receiver from last week's game was Barry Hill with 185 yards, three touchdowns, and eight receptions.Â
West Virginia State's run game has been solid as well. During the 2022 campaign, WVSU is averaging 180.9 yards per game. Both Tavis McAdoo and Joel Felder are close to eclipsing the 500-yard rushing mark this season. Currently, Felder is averaging 5.9 yards per carry with McAdoo close behind with 5.3 yards per carry.
In last week's game against Concord, the Yellow Jackets' defense allowed 38 points and 552 yards of total offense. 450 of those yards came in the air however, WVSU forced two interceptions that were returned for a total of 34 yards. The Yellow Jackets' defensive line was also active throughout the contest forcing three tackles for loss and two sacks.
A Look at Your Pioneers
Glenville state enters Saturday's coming off a loss to Notre Dame College 38-16. The Pioneers committed 135 penalty yards which surpassed the previous 2022 season high. Glenville's aerial attack would be held to 164 yards. Freshman Anthony Garrett made his third career start for the Pioneers. Through three games Garret has thrown for 626 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Glenville's receiving core during the 2022 campaign has been led by Junior Javian Bellamy. Bellamy has five touchdowns and 647 yards on 43 targets. Sophomore Orion Bonner has already passed his season total from his Freshman year. So far this season Bonner has three receiving touchdowns and 461 yards.Â
While Glenvilles' defense allowed 36 points last week, the Pioneers only allowed 323 total yards of offense. As a team in the defeat to Notre Dame College, the Pioneers produced two tackles for loss, three quarterback hurries, broke up two passes, and forced a fumble. Curently Glenville is ninth in the nation in interceptions. Over eight different Pioneers have forced interceptions this season. Dane Lynch Jr. leads the team in interceptions with three followed by Sean Bowers and Noah McBride with two.
