The Pioneers Host West Virginia Wesleyan to End 2022 Season

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State's Football team is set to host the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats for Senior Night. In the last five matchups between these two squads, the Pioneers are 4-1 and have won three straight. With a win over the Bobcats, Saturday Glenville would reach the seven-win mark for the second time under Head Coach Mike Kellar.

A Look at the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats

West Virginia Wesleyan enters the game with a (1-9) overall record and (1-8) in the Mountain East Conference. The Bobcats' lone win of the season came against Alderson Broaddus back in October. WVWC is coached by Dwayne Martin who enters his second year under the helm but his eighth season with the program. 

As a team, West Virginia Wesleyan averages 14 points a game. The Bobcat's passing game during the 2022 campaign has averaged 180 yards per game. With four more passing touchdowns than rushing coach Martin's squad looks to throw the ball. Sophomore Nathan Payne leads the team in passing yards with 1,657. Payne also has accounted for eight touchdowns and 11 interceptions this season. The top receiver for West Virginia Wesleyan is Devin Washington. Washington currently is third in the conference for receiving yards with 764. 

On the defensive side of the ball, the Bobcats are anchored by Senior Deontre Logan. Logan leads WVWC in tackles with 95,10.5 tackles for loss, and three sacks. The 95 tackles made by Logan currently has him ranked fifth in the MEC. Line Backer Renard Matthews so far this season has accounted for a team-high three quarterback hurries. As a unit, West Virginia Wesleyan has produced seven interceptions. However, opposing offenses average 247 rushing yards per game which favors Glenville's ground game.

A Look at Your Glenville State Pioneers

Glenville State enters Saturday's contest on a two-game winning streak and a (6-4) overall record. Coach Kellar's squad is (5-4) in the conference sitting sixth in the standings. In the Pioneer's dramatic 38-36 win over rivals Fairmont State University, the offense was clicking and Coach Hill's defense continued to make plays.

Freshman Anthony Garrett threw for a career-high four touchdowns last week along with 257 passing yards. Garrett only starting in five games this season has sits just outside the top ten in the conference for passing yards. Javian Bellamy has been Garrett's go-to target his season. Bellamy currently ranks second in the MEC for receiving yards with 817. Javian also is a deep threat catching eight touchdowns during the 2022 season. Sophomore Orion Bonner is just shy of 600 receiving yards with 597.

GSU's rushing attack has complemented the offense well helping the Pioneers average 417 total yards of offense. Alfred Menjor leads Glenville State in rushing yards with 797. Redshirt Freshman Zakee Swann also has proven to be a threat on the ground rushing for 522 yards. The Pioneer's go-to back in the red zone has been Saeed Galloway. Galloway has found the endzone eight times during the 2022 campaign. 

Glenville's pass defense leads the conference in interceptions and is fourth in the nation forcing 16. As a team, the Pioneers only allow 205 yards threw the air. Ten different Pioneers have forced an interception. Dane Lynch Jr. currently has three interceptions followed by Sean Bowers, Shaun Sterling Jr., Mark Shepherd, and Noah McBride all with two. Shepherd also has accounted for six pass breakups. Junior linebacker Seth Arnold's 89 tackles currently places him seventh in the conference for tackles. Defensive lineman Marion Lawson has caused problems for opposing offensive lines producing four sacks.
