GSU Football Defeats West Virginia Wesleyan 27-14


Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State's Football capped off the 2022 season with a win over the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan 27-14. Both teams finished with 19 first downs but the Pioneers would be out-gained by 45 yards. Glenville's balance between the run and pass game proved to be the difference maker.

With losing the coin toss the Pioneers started the game with the ball and scored on their opening drive. Anthony Garrett was able to connect with Orion Bonner early setting up Glenville's ground game. Zakee Swann rushed up the middle for 14-yards finding the back of the endzone. Both teams throughout the quarter continued to drive the ball but turnovers halted any momentum.
 
In the beginning of the second quarter, Wesleyan gained the lead 7-6 on a touchdown pass by Nathan Payne. Both squads caught fire after a slow start combining for 28 points. On Glenville's next drive a 4-yard rush by Alfred Menjor helped the Pioneers regain the lead. The Bobcats Devin Washington broke free for a 47-yard rush putting Wesleyan in the red zone. On the next play, West Virginia Wesleyan would regain the lead 14-13. Before heading into the half Anthony Jordan connected with Javian Bellamy for his first passing touchdown of the game. 

Glenville's and Wesleyan's offenses slowed down in the second half. l. The only points of the final half came in the third quarter. On the Pioneer's second offensive possession of the half, Garrett found a streaking Zay Huff for a 71-yard touchdown pass extending their lead 27-14. Glenville's defense found a way in the second half to stop the Bobcat's rushing attack. With having to throw the ball through adverse conditions on third and long Wesleyan would not score again. 

On Senior Day Zay Huff lead all receivers in yards with 131 and paired it with a touchdown. Anthony Garrett finished the contest with 231 passing yards and two touchdowns. Seth Arnold lead the Pioneers in tackles with nine. Senior Bob Jonjo and Brandon Penn both produced six tackles.
