Lady Pioneers Begin 2022-23 Season at the 2022 Atlantic Region Tip-Off Challenge

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State's Women's Basketball team begins the 2022-23 season on the road at the 2022 Atlantic Region Tip-Off Challenge hosted by West Virginia State. The Lady Pioneers will face PSAC opponent West Chester. This will be the seventh time these two schools have faced each other. Glenville is 4-2 all-time in the series.

A Look at Your Lady Pioneers

Coming off the National Championship Coach Kim Stephens's squad has many new faces only returning four players. Skylar Davidson returns for her Sophomore season. Davidson averaged 12.8 minutes per game and played 19 minutes in the NCAA Semifinal game against Grand Valley State. Deja Atkinson returns for her sophomore season as well. Like Davidson Atkinson played major minutes in the NCAA Tournament.

All-MEC Second Team guard Dream Cherry is one of many new additions to the Lady Pioneers. During the 2021-22 season Cherry was seventh in the Mountain East Conference in points per game with 15.6. Transfer Breanna Campbell from Indian River State started in 14 games and averaged 16.1 points per game. Hya Haywood and Mickayla Purdue look to start off their Glenville careers on a high note. Haywood last season produced 8.2 points per game. Purdue spent the 2021-22 campaign at the University of Toledo.

The Lady Pioneers will have to replace the production of guards Re'Shawna Stone and Zakiyah Winfield. Former GSU standouts Abby and Emily Stoller join coach Stephens's coaching staff.

A Look at West Chester

The Golden Rams were selected fourth in the PSAC East Preseason poll. Head Coach Kiera Wooden enters her ninth season in charge of the program. Under Coach Wooden, the Golden Rams have made three NCAA Tournament appearances.

Wester Chester returns their top two scorers from last season Leah Johnson and Alexa Abbonizio. During the 2021-22 season, Johnson averaged 16.1 points per game and 8.2 rebounds. Abbonizio shooting 30% from three in the previous season produced 9.7 points per game.

As a team, the Golden Rams were the 12th-best offense in the entire conference. West Chester was a top-five team in offensive rebounding in the PSAC accumulating 12.3 per contest. They also were one of the better teams in the conference distributing the ball.
