GSU Women’s Basketball Ends 2022 Atlantic Region Tip-Off 2-0

Institute, W.Va. - The Lady Pioneers picked up another win in the 2022 Atlantic Region Tip-Off over Livingstone College 85-56. Glenville wraps up the weekend 2-0 before starting the conference play against West Virginia State. The Lady Pioneers scored 32 more points off of turnovers than the Blue Bears.

In the first quarter, Livingstone jumped out an early lead taking advantage of some miscues made by GSU. Dream Cherry snapped the Lady Pioneers opening cold streak. The entire opening quarter of the contest would be close with both squads keeping it within one or two possessions. With 21 seconds left a three by Kamiyah Lyons gave Glenville their first lead of the game.

Building from the momentum gained in the previous quarter Coach Stephens's squad started to take control of the contest. After taking the lead the Lady Pioneers did not look back. While Glenville only shot the ball 35% from the field in the second quarter, the press was starting to get to the Blue Bears. The Lady Pioneers forced seven Livingstone turnovers which lead to seven points. Heading into the half Glenville had the advantage 39-30.

In the third quarter, the Lady Pioneers were able to extend their lead to 16. Both teams caught fire from the field shooting over 50%. However, Glenville was able to produce more shots thanks to the 19 turnovers by Livingstone in the remaining two quarters. 11 of the 19 turnovers came in the third quarter. Closing out the third on a 13-2 run, GSU headed into the last ten minutes in control.

The Lady Pioneers continued to shoot the ball well in the fourth quarter. Glenville shot their best from three in the remaining ten minutes shooting 40%. The press continued to cause problems for the Blue Bears. Livingstone was only able to produce ten points in the fourth shooting 27% from the field. Freshman Lauren Hawthrone scored her first colligate basket for the Lady Pioneers before the end of regulation.
