Lady Pioneers Host the Yellow Jackets to Open Conference Play

Glenville, W.Va. - The Lady Pioneers open Mountian East Conference play against the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State. Since 2017 Glenville is 13-0 against West Virginia State. Both teams started the 2022-23 season at the Atlantic Region Tip-Off and are 2-0 entering Saturday's contest. 

A Look at West Virginia State

The Yellow Jackets are coached by Charles Marshall who enters his seventh season with the program. Marshall before coming to West Virginia State was the head coach for the Lady Pioneers from 2013-2016. Currently, his record with the Yellow Jackets is (48-37) overall.

So far during the 2022-23 season, West Virginia State ranks second in the nation in scoring averaging 107 points per game. Five Yellow Jackets are averaging 10 or more points a contest. Shelby Harmeyer leads the team in scoring producing 16.5 points per game followed by Anysa Jordan and Hannah Shriver with 14.

Along with being able to score West Virginia State rebounds the ball well averaging 29 a game which is the best in the conference. Sophomore Emyah Fortenberry currently leads the team accounting for 13.5 rebounds a game. In a win over West Chester Fortenberry produced 14 rebounds. Harmeyrs along with scoring has been active in West Virginia State's rebounding effort. She is three boards away from averaging a double-double.

A Look at Your Lady Pioneers

In both of the Lady Pioneers games from the Atlantic Region Tip-Off explosive third and fourth quarters have propelled Glenville to the 2-0 start. So far during the 2022-23 campaign in the final two-quarters GSU has scored 117 points. Coach Stephen's squad is 16th in the nation for turnovers forced per game. In the win over Livingstone, the Lady Pioneers forced 33 turnovers.

Transfer Breanna Campbell leads the Pioneers in scoring with 16 points per game. The junior from Lago, Fla. in both contests scored 16 points. Mickayla Perdue is close behind Campbell averaging 14 points per game. In the season opener against West Chester Perdue led the team in scoring with 20 points. Both sophomores Dream Cherry and Skylar Davidson are averaging 10-plus points per game. 

Defensively Glenville State's style of play has propelled them to be one top teams in the conference in turnover margin and steals per game. The Lady Pioneers produce 17 steals per game which is second in the MEC. On average Glenville wins the turnover battle by 13 ranking them ninth in the country.
