Lady Pioneers Travel to the Golden Eagles for MEC Matchup

Glenville, W.Va. - The Lady Pioneers travel to the University of Charleston to face the Golden Eagles. Glenville's only loss of the 2021-22 season came against UC in the Mountain East Championship. Since 2011 the Lady Pioneers are 22-10 against the Golden Eagles and 3-2 in the last five. 

A Look at the University of Charleston

The University of Charleston is coached by Tianni Kelly who enters her third season with the program. In Kelly's first two seasons the Golden Eagles have won back-to-back MEC Tournament Championships. UC enters Tuesday's contest with a (3-1) overall record (1-0) in conference play. 

In the Golden Eagles' win over the Mountain Lions of Concord University Haley Moore and Clarrissa Francis, both produced 15 points off the bench. Moore finished paired her 15 points with 10 rebounds for a double-double.

So far this season four of Charleston's players are averaging 10 or more points this season. Senior Markiya McCormick leads the Golden Eagles in scoring accounting for 18.7 points per game. Trinity Palacio through four games is averaging 15.5 points along with a team high 4.3 assists. Both Dakota Reeves and Clarrissa Francis are averaging 11.3 points per game.

A Look at Your Lady Pioneers

Coach Stephens's squad is coming off a 75-70 victory over West Virginia State. The Lady Pioneers were able to hold a highly productive WV State offense to below their season average of 89 points per contest. GSU forced a season-high 35 turnovers against the Yellow Jackets. Hya Haywood led the Lady Pioneers in steals with six followed by Breanna Campbell with four.

So far during the 2022-23 campaign Breanna Campbell leads GSU in scoring averaging 14.7 points per game. Transfers Mickalyla Perdue and Hya Haywood are close behind averaging 12.7 and 12.3 points per contest. Haywood and Campbell have been some of the best distributors for the Lady Pioneers this season. Hya currently leads GSU in assists with 4.0 per game followed by Breanna with 3.0.

As a team, the Lady Pioneers are third in the country for turnovers forced per game. Opponents are averaging 30 turnovers a game against Glenville State. While the Lady Pioneers only shoot 28.8% from three, they are fourth in the nation for made three-pointers per contest.
