Glenville State Men’s Basketball Falls to Salem University 95-93 in Overtime

Salem, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball team fell in overtime to Salem University 95-93 ending Glenville's winning streak. The Pioneers would lead most of the contest but could not pull away. While Glenville shot 53.3% from the field in the first half, the Pioneers were held to 34.3% in the second. 

Coach Justin Caldwell's Pioneers struck first with a three by Jordan Turbo Smith. Smith would get Glenville's offense started scoring 8 points in the opening five minutes. The Pioneers' first momentum swing started at the 17:57 mark. With an 11-4 run, GSU took a nine-point advantage before the first media timeout.

Glenville did take their largest lead of the first half 28-15 with around ten minutes remaining. However, the Pioneers would hit a cold spell shooting the ball. Salem took advantage of Glenville's shooting woes eventually tying the game. With a 21-10 run, Salem had erased the Pioneer's lead at the 4:38 Mark. 

Both squads continued to trade blows before the half. The Pioneers regained an eight-point advantage 50-42 in the closing minute of the half. Before time would expire Salem's Justin Tene hit a three shrinking GSU's lead to five.

Coming out of the half Salem continued to keep the contest within a couple of possessions. A three-pointer by Stan Smith gave the Tigers their first lead of the game. At the 14:29 mark, Salem had their largest lead 59-55.

Not until the remaining 11 minutes would the Pioneers regain control of the game. After Freddie Word regained the lead for Glenville, Coach Caldwell's squad produced a 13-4 run. During the Pioneer's hot stretch Jacquez Yow was on fire scoring nine points in a span of three minutes. Before heading into the final media timeout Salem started to surge back cutting GSU's advantage to five once again.

Coming out of the final media timeout the Tigers made it a one-possession game with a lay-up by Ian Hardy. Both teams traded buckets until the last minute. Salem tied it up 85-85 with 50 seconds remaining. The Pioneers and Tigers would have multiple looks but could not convert sending it to overtime. 

While Glenville would lose the tip, GSU struck first in overtime with a layup by Jaelin Johnson. The Pioneers did take a four-point lead but Salem found a way to tie it. Once again both squads continued to trade buckets until the last minute. A three-pointer but the Tigers up 94-93 with 53 seconds remaining. After a missed layup the Pioneers had no choice but to foul Salem. The Tigers would go 1-2 from the line only making it a two-point game. Glenville had chances to win the game but could not convert.

Jacquez Yow led the Pioneers in scoring with 28 points. Yow finished the contest just one rebound shy of a double-double. Jordan Turbo Smith also finished the game with 20 or more points but had a team-high seven assists. Junior Freddie Word and Jaelin Johnson both finished the contest with double figures.
