GSU Women’s Basketball Hosts Chowan University for Kids Day

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team will start a three-game home stretch against Chowan University. Monday afternoon's contest will also be Kids Day. This will be the second time the Lady Pioneers and Hawks have met. Both squads currently sit at the top of their conferences.

A Look at Chowan

The Hawks enter Monday's game with a (7-2) overall record and (4-1) in Conference Carolinas play. Chowan has already faced a ranked opponent this season in Georgia Southwestern. CU would keep it to within seven until the final quarter. 

Chowan is coached by Lenise Stallings who enters her fourth season with the program. In coach Stallings's four seasons the Hawks have gone (38-42). Under her direction, Monique Jones earned her third All-Confrence selection.

Through nine games this season the Hawks have been one of the best defensive teams in their conference and across Division II. Currently, Chowan ranks first in the nation for opposing field goal percentage holding teams to 30% from the field. Coach Stallings's squad also defends well from three. On average opponents are shooting 24.2% from three against the Hawks. Chowan has also been one of the better defensive-rebounding teams in Conference Carolinas. The Hawks on average produce 32.2 defensive rebounds a contest. 

Destiny Robinson leads Chowan in scoring this season with 10.9 points per game. Robinson also is producing a team-high in rebounds with 9.9 per contest. Junior Tyaysia Sharpe has been the Hawk's best distributor during the 2022-23 campaign accounting for 3.0 assists per game. Sharpe also has been one the better three-point shooters on the team shooting 31.8% from deep.

A Look at Your Lady Pioneers

Glenville enters the contest with an overall record of (9-1) and (5-1) in the Mountian East Conference. The Lady Pioneers are coming off a 73-48 win over the Bald Eagles of Lock Haven University. While GSU only shot 38% from the field the Lady Pioneers were able to hold the Bald Eagles to 10% from three.

The Lady Pioneers continue to have the top-scoring offense in all of Division II averaging 92 points per game. While GSU has only shot around 32% from three Coach Stephens's squad makes a conference-high 10 three-pointers a game. Glenville has also been one of the best teams in the conference in offensive rebounding. Through a third of the season, the Lady Pioneers average 17.8 offensive rebounds a game. GSU has been solid on the defensive side of the ball. On average the press has forced a total of 30.1 turnovers per game which has led to a conference-high 16.9 steals per game.

Mickayla Perdue leads the Lady Pioneers in scoring this season averaging just shy of 15 points per game. Perdue's 14.9 points per game ranks her ninth in the MEC for points per contest. Both Perdue and Tor'e Alford have been GSU's best three-point shooters this season shooting over 40% from three. Junior Breanna Campbell so far has proven to be one of the Lady Pioneers' best distributors.  During the 2022-23 season, Campbell has accounted for 42 assists which is the second-best in the conference. Fifth-year senior Mo Pruitt has started to become a threat on both ends of the court. Pruitt in ten games is averaging 11.7 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game.
