No. 9 Lady Pioneers Host the Battlers Saturday in MEC Clash

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State's Women's Basketball team starts off a two-game home stretch against the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus. The Lady Pioneers enter Saturday's contest coming off a win against Notre Dame College on the road. In Alderson Broaddus's last time out, they defeated Concord at home 68-57. Since 2011 Glenville has been (8-0) against the Battlers and (3-0) in Mountain East Conference play. 

A Look at Alderson Broaddus

Coming into Saturday's matchup Alderson Broaddus enters with a (2-5) overall record and (1-2) in league play. To kick off the 2022-23 campaign the Battlers started off with a win over Shepherd University 83-67. After starting the season off win a win AB dropped their next five. Last Wednesday the Battlers were able to pick up their first conference win of the season against the Mountain Lions 68-57.

Ta-rel Franklin enters his first under the helm at AB. For the past three seasons, Franklin was an assistant for the Men's program under Coach Dye. As an assistant for the Battlers Men's team, AB reached the MEC Tournament Semifinals in 2022. Entering the tournament they were the seventh seed pulling off the upset against West Virginia State.

As a team, the Battlers are averaging 68.3 points per game but allow a conference-high 80 points per contest. Through seven games opponents are shooting around 45% from the field. However, Alderson Broaddus is one of the top teams in the conference in free throw percentage. Coach Franklin's squad currently is shooting 73.9% from the line which is second in the MEC.

Alderson Broaddus has three individuals averaging 10 or more points per game. Iyahnna Williams leads the Battlers in scoring producing 19.3 points per game. Williams has also been active on glass accounting for 9.4 rebounds per contest just shy of a double-double. In the matchup against Shepherd Iyahnna went off for 33 points. Junior forward Hannah Taylor is currently averaging 13.6 points and 7.7 rebounds. In the game against West Liberty, Taylor produced a double-double scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

A Look at Your Lady Pioneers

Glenville State enters with a (4-1) overall record and (2-1) in the MEC. The Lady Pioneers were able to cruise past the Falcons of Notre Dame College with monster performances by Mo Pruitt and Breanna Campbell. Pruitt got to the rim scoring 30 points for Glenville. Mo finished the game with 11 rebounds earning her first double-double of the season. Breanna Campbell scored 24 points in 21 minutes in the Lady Pioneers' win for a new season high.

Through five games GSU has the #1 scoring offense in all of Division II averaging 90 points per game. Coach Stephens's squad is also first in the nation in turnover margin and turnovers forced per game. Opponents on average are turning over the ball 30 times a game against Glenville. The Lady Pioneers high scoring offense and press has led to Glenville having the best scoring margin in the league at 21.8 points per contest. 

Transfer Breanna Campbell leads the Lady Pioneers in scoring so far this season. Campbell in her five games played is averaging 15.2 points per game which is 11th in the MEC. Mickayla Perdue, Mo Pruitt, and Hya Haywood all are producing ten or more points per contest for Glenville. Haywood a native of Evansville, Ind. is ranked fourth in the league for steals. Through five games Hya is accounting for 3.2 steals per game which is 16th across Division II Women's Basketball.
