Men’s Basketball Travels to Bluefield State for Non-Conference Matchup

Glenville, W.Va. - Coming off their first Mountian East Conference win against Alderson Broaddus, the Pioneers are back on the road facing old WVIAC foe Bluefield State. GSU has not faced the Big Blue since the 2018-19 season. Glenville would win the contest 100-80 here inside the Waco Center

A Look at Bluefield State

The Big Blue enters Monday's game with a (3-4) record overall. Since starting off the 2022-23 campaign with four consecutive losses, Bluefield State has won three straight. The Big Blue's winning ways started at the HBCU Gameday Classic where they defeated Cheyney University of Pennsylvania and the University of the District of Columbia. Head coach Devin Hoehn enters his fourth season under the helm. Under Hoehn's tenure, the Big Blue have been (27-36) since his arrival before the 2019-20 season.  

As a team, Bluefield State is averaging 90.6 points per game which is tenth in the nation. Coach Hoehn's squad is one of the best free-throw shooting teams in the country. On average they shoot 78.4% from the line and make 19 of them per game. However, the Big Blue allow 87 points per contest ranking them towards the bottom across all Division II teams. While Bluefield State is an above-average rebounding team, the Big Blue excels at blocking shots. Through seven games BSU produces just shy of six blocks per game. 

Malik Tidwell leads Bluefield State in scoring this season averaging 18.1 points. The junior from Chicago, Ill. has produced four games where he has scored 20 or more points. Landry Palata locks down the paint for the Big Blue. Palata currently sits second in the nation for blocks with 27 this season. Hirotaka Ohashi is another key contributor for Bluefield State. While Ohashi is not known as a scorer, he distributes the ball efficiently averaging 4.9 assists per contest.

A Look at Your Pioneers

Glenville enters the game with a (3-4) overall record and (1-3) in the Mountian East Conference. In the Pioneer's last time out, Coach Caldwell's squad shot the ball well crushing season highs in field goal shooting and three-point shooting. In the second half versus Alderson Broaddus GSU shot 41.4% from the field and 64% from three. 

The Pioneers continue to put pressure on opposing teams. On average opponents are turning over the ball 21.1 times per game which is fourth in the nation only behind West Liberty in the conference. With Glenville forcing a high amount of turnovers, it has helped them win the turnover battle. The Pioneers have been a superb offensive-rebounding team during the 2022-23 campaign. Through seven games GSU averages a conference-high 15.0 rebounds per contest.

Jordan "Turbo" Smith leads the Pioneers in scoring this season averaging 17.8 per game. Smith a native of Titusville, Fla. has been one of the Pioneer's best initiators of the press forcing 22 steals this season. Junior Freddie Word is close behind Smith in scoring producing 15.1 points per contest. Along with contributing on the offensive end, Word has been one of GSU's best rebounders. Freddie so far during the 2022-23 campaign is averaging 6.6 rebounds per game.
