Lady Pioneers Set to Face MEC Rivals Fairmont State University

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team will head north on I-79 to face the Falcons of Fairmont State University. Both teams enter Saturday's Mountain East Conference match atop of the league standings. Coach Stephen's squad is 2-3 in the last five matchups at Joe Retton Arena. With a win, Glenville can start to create separation in the league standings.

A Look at Fairmont State

Fairmont State enters the contest with a (6-2) overall record and (4-1) in the conference. The Falcons are coming off a win against Concord University 78-69. Jalen Gibbs and Katy Darnell both produced a double-double in their win over the Mountain Lions.

The Falcons are coached by Stephanie Anderson who enters her fourth season. In her four seasons at Fairmont, Anderson has posed a record of 43-39. Coach Anderson in her tenure as head coach three players have received all-conference honors.

As a team, Fairmont State is the best team in the nation at getting to the free-throw line. On average the Falcons attempt 31 free throws per contest which is #1 in the country. While Fairmont is shooting around the conference average from the line, they make 22 per game ranking them first for free throws made. Coach Anderson's squad also forces a fair amount of turnovers. FSU is only behind Glenville state for turnovers forced in the conference's rankings. However, they turnover the ball 19 times a game.

Junior Alyssa DeAngelo has been lights out for the Falcons this season. During the 2022-23 campaign DeAngelo is averaging 22.1 points per game which is tenth across all of Division II. In five games this season she has produced 20 or more points. Katy Darnell has been active on both ends of the court for Fairmont State. In her senior season, Darnell is averaging 17.6 points per game and 7.4 rebounds.

A Look at Your Lady Pioneers

Glenville State enters Saturday's conference matchup with a (6-1) overall record and (4-1) in the league. Since the Lady Pioneers' first conference loss against the University of Charleston, they have won three straight. During this stretch Coach Stephens's team has produced 100 or more points in all three wins.

GSU has been one of the best teams in the league at distributing the ball. The Lady Pioneers average a conference-best 17.7 assists per contest. With Glenville scoring 100 or more points four times this season, they are the #1 scoring offense in Divison II Women's Basketball. The Lady Pioneers' high-scoring offense has also them ranked among the best in scoring margin. On the defensive side of the ball, GSU's press has caused opponents problems. On average Glenville forces 30.2 turnovers a game while only turning over the ball 15.4 times per contest.

Both Mickyla Perdue and Breanna Campbell lead the Lady Pioneers in scoring with 15.1 points per game. Transfers Hya Haywood and Mo Pruitt are also averaging double figures for Glennville. Haywood's 2.7 steals per contest is a team-high helping GSU get out in transition. Pruitt a native of Chicago, Ill has been one of the squad's best defensive rebounders. In the last three games, junior Tor'e Alford has been on a hot streak from three. During the Lady Pioneers' winning streak Alford has shot 65% from deep.
