INSTITUTE – Glenville State led for much of the first half Monday night, but could not hold off a hot-shooting West Virginia State squad, falling to the Yellow Jackets .
John Williams Jr. led the early game production from the Pioneers. GSC held leads at several points in the first half, and was still on top 33-32 at the 8:34 mark. State rallied to end the half with a 23-5 run, pushing to a 55-38 halftime lead. Glenville could not overcome this deficit in the second half, but the Pioneers did tally 55 points in the second half.
Williams Jr. padded his league leading scoring average, leading the Pioneers with 25 points. He was complemented by Dajon Congleton, who recorded a career-high 23 points. Luke LeRose was the other Pioneer in double figures with 11 points. Congleton and Tommy Williams led the Pioneers in rebounding with six each.
Glenville connected on 15 three-pointers; four from Williams Jr, and three each from LeRose and Congleton. GSC led in team rebounding 37-28, but the extra possessions could not overcome State's 63.8% night from the field.
State was led by Ernest Jenkins with 24 points, followed by Anthony Pittman and Glen Abram with 15 points each.
Glenville falls to 9-13 on the season, 6-12 in the Mountain East Conference. State improve to 19-6 overall, and 14-4 in the MEC.
Coach Justin Caldwell's Pioneer squad remains on the road, traveling to Davis & Elkins on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 in Elkins.
