Charleston punched their ticket to the Sweet 16 Saturday night, pulling away in the second half for a 52-34 victory.
Charleston would score only two points in the first quarter, as California methodically powered to a 13-2 lead at the quarter break. But the Golden Eagles were dominant from there coming back to take a 17-15 halftime lead, then gaining separation in the third quarter by extending the advantage to 37-19. As their defense remained tight on the Vulcans, they were able to cruise through the latter stages of the fourth quarter.
Clarissa Francis led UC with 14 points, followed by Markiya McCormick and Jamia Nesmith with 10 each. Nesmith was a force on the glass, recording a game-high 18 rebounds.
Brionna Allen led Cal with 14 points, with Shauna Harrison adding 11. Lauren Bennett posted a team-high 11 rebounds.
California closes their season 25-6. Charleston advances on to Monday night's regional final with an overall mark of 23-8.
SEMIFINAL – GM #2 – RECAP
Glenville 82, Shepherd 70 - Box Score
Shepherd battled the #1 ranked Glenville State squad blow-for-blow Saturday in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, but the Lady Pioneers closed the game on a 14-2 run to claim an exciting 82-70 victory. The game featured 11 lead changes, and the Rams would hold the advantage for over 22 minutes of the contest.
By the midway point of the second quarter, Shepherd had built a 35-28 lead. Glenville was able to close the half on a 14-8 run, cutting the deficit to 43-42 at intermission. Throughout the frenetic second half, the teams battled back and forth with neither team able to build a lead beyond five points until the final minute.
With the game tied at 68-68, Tyesha Taylor hit a put-back with an offensive rebound to put GSU up 70-68at the 1:36 mark. Of larger significance, Shepherd star Sydney Clayton picked up her fifth foul on the play. Dazha Congleton would score two more quick buckets, one off a Re'Shawna Stone steal (and a Mashayla Cecil assist), and the second off a steal of her own. After two Stone free throws, Zakiyah Winfield closed the issue with a pair of late layups.
Congleton led the Lady Pioneers with 27 points, followed by Winfield with 19 and Stone with 14. Winfield posted team highs with 10 rebounds and four assists. Congleton led all defenders by snagging five steals.
Clayton led Shepherd with 26 points, and was complemented by Jordan Smith with 14. Abby Beeman dished out a staggering 15 assists, while Hannah Myers led all rebounders with 13.
Shepherd shot 52.% from the floor, with Glenville shooting 47.8%.
Shepherd ends their successful season at 25-8. Glenville advances to the Sweet 16 with an overall mark of 31-1. They face MEC rival Charleston in the Regional Championship game on Monday night.
Tip-off is set for 7:00 in the Waco Center.
