Box Score WHEELING – Glenville's Men saw their season come to end Wednesday night, falling to Wheeling in the Mountain East Conference Tournament, 78-72. GSU made a torrid comeback in the second half, but could not overcome an 18-point deficit that the Cardinals had produced with 17 minutes remaining.
Glenville sprinted out to a quick 7-0 lead, but the by the 9:27 mark the teams were locked in a 14-14 tie. At that point, the Cardinals went on a 15-2 run, snagging a 29-16 lead by the final media timeout of the half. It would be a lead they would never relinquish.
Wheeling held the 18-point advantage at 47-29 at the 17:25 mark. At this point, Glenville began to make shots and whittle away at the deficit. It started with an 11-2 Pioneer surge that cut the margin to 49-40 at the 14:44 mark. The deficit would drop to six on four different occasions before a John Williams Jr. dunk cut the score 70-66 with 4:22 left. A Gus Eddy runner made it 72-68 with 2:35 remaining, followed by Williams Jr. powering home consecutive drives, drawing the margin to two at 74-72 with 1:08 left.
Unfortunately for the Pioneer faithful, the valiant comeback could not be fully completed. Wheeling made their free throws down the stretch to close the game.
Adrian Scarborough led the Pioneer effort with 21 points and 18 rebounds. He was a solid 10-of-11 from the field. Williams Jr. scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, with Tommy Williams scoring 18 as well, draining six three-point field goals.
Jordan Reid led Wheeling with 28 points, with Jarrett Haines tallying 22.
Glenville closes their season at 12-16. Wheeling advances with record of 10-19.
