CHARLESTON – Glenville's young Pioneer softball team played to a doubleheader split on Saturday afternoon against Southern Division power, the University of Charleston. Glenville won Game One 5-4, with Charleston taking Game Two, 13-6. The games were played at Charleston's historic Watt Powell Annex.
In Game One, Glenville entered the sixth inning down 2-0, but rallied to plate five runs and take a 5-2 lead.
Natalie Fout had a two-RBI double in the frame. UC would score single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but GSU would hold on for the 5-4 win.
Holly Brehm went the distance on the mound, striking out nine Golden Eagle hitters. It was her fifth victory of the season.
In Game Two, Glenville raced to a quick 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, spearheaded a towering three-run homer off the bat of
Monica Rodelo.
Sophia Delvecchio added a two-run blast to stake the five-run lead. Charleston answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the margin to 5-3. GSU got a run back in the third, pushing the lead to 6-3. Charleston scored two in the third, and two more in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead. They extended their lead with six more runs in the final two innings.
RBI's were also recorded on the day by GSU hitters
Haylee Stevens and
Jasmine Runk.
With the split, Glenville is now 6-16 overall, and 2-8 in the Mountain East Conference. Charleston is 14-11 overall, and 7-3 in the MEC.
Glenville is back in action on Sunday, traveling to Institute to face West Virginia State.
