GSU Men's Basketball Returns Home for Weekend Conference Clash

Glenville, W. Va. Glenville State Men's Basketball returns to their home court for Winter Homecoming welcoming Concord University. With both squads entering the contest with the same conference record, Saturday's Mountain East Conference matchup will have huge implications in the standings. This will be the first time the Pioners are facing the Mountian Lions this season.

A Look at Your Pioneers

In recent series history, Glenville has come out on top in three of the last five games against the Mountain Lions. However, in the last five inside the Waco Center Glenville State is 1-4. Coach Caldwell's Pioneers have had a great start to the new year. Since the month of January, GSU has been (5-1) and (4-1) in league play.

Against the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State, the Pioneers had a high-scoring first half against WVSU, 47-29. After halftime, GSU almost doubled their score while still staying ahead. Throughout the game, Glenville racked up 54 Rebounds to State's 39. Junior guard Freddie Word has a dominant game producing a triple-double. Word Produced  22 points, 13 rebounds, and ten assists in the winning effort. Harrison Eghan also had a solid game scoring 14 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.

The Pioneers are ranked fifth in the Mountain East Conference and are averaging 89.1 points per game. With a strong defense, GSU is standing at 3rd in defense, only allowing roughly 77.6 points per game. Glenville State has also distributed the ball at a high level. On average the Pioneers are producing 16.6 assists per contest which is 26th in the nation and third in the MEC.

  • 41.6: As a team, GSU sits 11th in the nation for rebounds per game. 

A Look at Concord University

After the recent loss to Charleston University, Concord is looking for a win to jump ahead of Glenville State in the Conference standings. The Mountain Lions fell just short in the first half against the Golden Eagles, 36-49. With a strong second half, Concord outscored Charleston 46-44, but still fell short in the end with a final score of 82-93. 

Under Coach May, the Mountain Lions have made multiple conference tournament semifinals and Coach May has also produced an All-American. Before joining CU, Coach May made an impact at Columbus State Community College where he helped in leading the team to a national tournament appearance just a few years before making his way to Concord University. 

The Mountain Lions have been a very disciplined team at rebounding and taking care of the ball. As a team, Concord is averaging 28.5 defensive rebounds per contest which is second in the conference and 20th in all of Division II.  While Coach May's squad does not force many turnovers, they only average 14.1 turnovers per game.
