Glenville State Men’s Basketball Set to Host Wheeling University

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball team is back in action inside the Waco Center against the Cardinals of Wheeling University. Last Season the Pioneers were (1-2) against Wheeling University. Six or fewer points decided two out of the three matchups from the 2021-22 season. With a win on Wednesday GSU can remain in the top half of the Mountain East Conference standings. 

A Look at Wheeling University

The Cardinals enter Wednesday Night's contest with a (2-10) overall record and (0-6) in conference play. Wheeling picked up their second defeating Franciscan University 88-64 last Friday. While WU has not won a conference game three MEC matchups have been decided by two points.

Head Coach Chris Richardson enters his third season with Wheeling University. While at Wheeling Richardson has made the MEC Conference Tournament every season. In last year's tournament, the Cardinals took their Rival West Liberty down to the wire in the quarterfinals. Before arriving at Wheeling University Coach Richardson was an assistant coach for Central Missouri.

As a team, the Cardinals are disciplined when it comes to fouling. On average Wheeling commits 15.2 fouls per game which is second in the conference. Through 12 games the Cardinals are averaging 75.3 points per game but allowing 77.8.

Marcus Johnson, John Korte, and Brent Price have been Wheeling University's main scorers this season. Wheeling's big three are all averaging 14 or more points per contest and play over 30 minutes a game. Korte and Price both rank inside the top three in the MEC for minutes per game. Johnson a native of Akron, Ohio has been the Cardinal's best three-point shooter. So far this season on 44 attempts Johnson has made 18 shooting 41% from deep. 

A Look at Your Pioneers

The Pioneers enter Wednesday's game with a (6-5) overall record and (3-3) in the league. GSU has not been in action since the exhibition against Marshall University on the 19th of December. Coach Caldwell's squad has had a solid month of December going (4-2). Historically the matchup against Wheeling has not favored Glenville going (3-7) in the last ten.

As a team, GSU is producing 87.3 points per game while allowing 82.5 per contest. The Pioneer's 87.3 points per game ranks them 14th in the nation for scoring offense and fourth in the MEC. Through 11 games this season Glenville has been a top offensive rebounding team. On average the Pioneers produce 14.75 offensive rebounds a game ranking them 1st in the conference and 5th in the nation.  

Jordan Turbo Smith, Freddie Word, Jacquez Yow, and Jamarvious Jones are all averaging double figures. Word along with Harrison Eghan has been the Pioneer's best rebounders this season. Freddie a native of Fort Myers, Fla. averages a team-high 5.8 defensive rebounds while Eghan leads the team offensively with 3.2. Turbo has been solid defensively for Glenville as well. The Junior has produced 31 steals this season ranking him second in the MEC and eighth in the country.
