GSU Women’s Basketball back on the Road to Face Alderson Broaddus

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team hits the road to face the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus. The Lady Pioneers were able to complete the comeback in the final two quarters to defeat Concord University. Since the first meeting back in December, Alderson Broaddus has pulled off a win against a ranked opponent.

A Look at Your Lady Pioneers

In the series' recent history, Glenville State is unbeaten in the last five. The matchup has also favored the Lady Pioneers when it has been played in Philippi, W.Va. Since 2011 GSU has faced the Battlers on the road three times and has won all three contests by 20 or more points.

Coach Stephens's squad in their last time out defeated Concord University 78-69. Glenville at the end of the first quarter jumped out to a five-point lead but found themselves trailing at the half. The Lady Pioneers' 44% shooting from the field in the final two quarters helped propel GSU over Concord. Glenville State also shot 90.5% from the free throw line setting a new season high. 

The Lady Pioneers continue to be one of the best offensive-rebounding teams in the conference and in the country. On average Glenville State is producing 16.4 offensive rebounds per contest which is second in the MEC and eighth in all of Division II. GSU has also been soled from the free throw line this season. Through 18 games the Lady Pioneers on average is shooting 73.8% from the free throw line which ranks first in the conference.

  • 25: Last week Breanna Campbell averaged a team-high 25 points per game.

A Look at Alderson Broaddus

Alderson Broaddus is coming off a 73-67 loss to Notre Dame College. The Battlers entered the half down eight but a strong third quarter gave AB the lead by three. A strong fourth quarter by NDC was enough to rout the Battlers late. Iyahnna Williams finished the contest with a game-high 24 points while shooting 50% from the field.

Since the last time, Alderson Broaddus faced Glenville State the Battlers have posted a 2-7 record. However, Coach Ta-Rel Franklin's squad defeated the #13 University of Charleston Golden Eagles. The Battler's defense was able to hold UC to 32.9% shooting from the field and 21.7% from beyond the arc.

As a team, AB has been one of the best teams in the conference at making their free throws. On average the Battlers are hitting 14 free throws per game which is fourth in the MEC. While Coach Franlikn's team has allowed the most points in the conference they defend the three at a high level. Through 17 games opponents are only shooting 30% from beyond the arc ranking Alderson Broaddus fourth in the MEC for three-point percentage defense. However, against pressing teams the Battlers have had 30-plus turnovers.
