Lady Pioneers Host Conference Rival Fairmont State University

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team hosts their Mountain East Conference rival Fairmont State University. With Fairmont defeating West Virginia State last Wednesday the Lady Pioneers have a one-game advantage in the conference standings. Since the season's first meeting, Glenville has only lost one contest.

A Look at Your Lady Pioneers

Glenville State has already faced the Falcons once this year where they came out on top 89-71. While the Lady Pioneers have struggled on the road against Fairmont State the Waco Center has been much more favorable to Glenville. GSU has won the last five home games and put up 100 or more points in three out of the five contests.  

The Lady Pioneers are coming off a 98-59 victory over Nore Dame College picking up their 12th conference win/ In the winning effort GSU made 15 threes on 41.7% shooting from beyond the arc. In half of Glenville's games this season the Lady Pioneers have hit ten or more threes. Mickayla Perdue Had another stellar performance for Glenville State finishing with a team-high 24 points. 

GSU as a unit last week was on a tear from the three-point line making 29 threes on 43% shooting. The Lady Pioneers have also limited their turnovers averaging 12 a contest. Consistently throughout the season, Coach Stpehens's squad has forced 28.1 turnovers per game which is first in the conference and in Division II. 

GSU by the Numbers
  • 15: Tor'e Alford had her highest point total in the month of January against Notre Dame College.
  • 15.9: Glenville State averages the second most offensive rebounds per game in the conference. 
  • 85: Breanna Campbell ranks third in the MEC for total assists.
  • 2:  Campbell picked up her second double-double of the 2022-23 campaign. 
  • 15.8: The Lady Pioneers rank third in the country for steals per contest. 

A Look at Fairmont State

The Falcons are coming off a 73-70 loss to the University of Charleston Golden Eagles. Entering the fourth quarter Fairmont State tailed by 13 but scoring 29 points in the fourth brought them back. With a foul in the final second of play sending UC to the line, Charleston escaped with the win.

Since the beginning of the new year, Coach Anderson's Falcons have gone (6-3). During this stretch, Fairmont State was able to upset the #18 West Virginia State Yellow Jackets. The Falcons currently sit sixth in the league standings three games back of GSU.

Fairmont throughout the 2022-23 campaign has been one of the best teams in the conference and across the country in getting to the free throw line. The Falcons are attempting 27.2 free throws per contest which is second in the nation. Fairmont State is converting their chances from the charity stripe leading all of Division II in free throws made per game with 19.7.

  • 21: Leslie Huffman produced a game-high in points against the University of Charleston.
  • 19.0: Junior Alyssa DeAngelo has been the Falcons' leading scorer this season. 
  • 25:  Jalen Gibbs sits second in the conference for total blocks.
  • 3.0: Both Katy Darnell and Gibs have been solid rebounders on the offensive end for Fairmont State.
  • 92.6%: The Falcons only missed two attempts from the free throw line against Charleston.
