Glenville State Women’s Basketball Gear up for Conference Clash Against West Liberty

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team continues the Mountain East Conference portion of their schedule against the Hilltoppers of West Liberty. With the Hilltoppers starting off conference play strong, the Lady Pioneers have another chance to create separation in the standings. Historically the matchup has favored GSU but 10 or fewer points have decided three out of the last five road games.

A Look at West Liberty

The Hilltoppers enter Saturday's game with a (7-5) overall record and (5-2) in MEC play. So far this season West Liberty has faced a total of three ranked opponents. To open the 2022-23 camping WLU took the #7 California University of Pennsylvania down to the wire. The Vulcans would come out on top in overtime by three 70-67.

Kyle Cooper enters his sixth season under the helm at West Liberty. Copper before becoming head coach served as an assistant under Lynn Ullom and has experience at the Division I level. Under Copper, the Hilltoppers have had two 20-win seasons and one NCAA tournament appearance.

As a team, West Liberty has been one the best teams in the conference at distributing the ball. The Hilltoppers with their 17.8 assists per game rank 1st in the MEC and 11th in the nation. West Liberty's superb passing has led them to have a high-scoring offense. Through 11 games the Toppers are producing 78.3 points per game ranking them 16th in the nation. Coach Cooper's squad also has been a top three-point shooting team. On average, West Liberty hits nine shots from beyond the arc which is 13th in the nation. 

Senior Arriana Manzay leads the Hilltoppers in scoring this season with 19.8 points per game and rebounds with 9.8. On five separate occasions, Manzay has produced a double-double this season. The Lubbock, Texas native has also produced two 30-point performances throughout the season. Karly McCutcheon has been the Topper's threat from deep. McCutcheon has hit a total of 40 three-pointers this season 44.4% shooting ranking her second in the MEC in both statistical categories.

A Look At Your Lady Pioneers

Glenville State is coming off an 84-68 victory over the Cardinals of Wheeling University.  The Lady Pioneers hit a total of 15 threes in the winning effort their second most in any game. GSU enters the contest with a (12-1) overall record and (6-1) in conference play.

Through 13 games the Lady Pioneers have the best three-point defense in the conference holding opponents to 26.9% from three. Glenville's press continues to wreak havoc on the opposing offense. Coach Stephens's squad is producing a conference-high 16.1 steals per game which is second in the nation. The Lady Pioneers' 16.1 steals per contest have led to GSU forcing the most turnovers in the nation. Similarly to the Hilltoppers, Glenville has shot well from beyond the arc. The Lady Pioneers are hitting a Division II best ten threes per game.

Juniors Mickayla Perdue and Breanna Campbell lead GSU in scoring this season averaging 14 points per game. Perdue and Tor'e Alford have emerged as one of the go-to options for Glenville State from three. Perdue, a transfer from Toledo University has hit a team-high 34 threes on 37% percent shooting with Alford close behind with 25. Mo Pruitt has produced a team-high 5.8 rebounds this season.
