BUFFALO, N.Y. – Coach Dylan Cottrell's nationally ranked Glenville State Wrestling team opened their 2023-24 campaign on Wednesday night in Buffalo. The Pioneers posted convincing victories over Niagara (46-6), and SUNY-Brockport (40-6) earlier in the day, then battled the D-I host Buffalo squad in a hard-fought 36-15 loss.
In the opener against Niagara, GSU dominated with wins posted by Devin Easton (125), Gavin Quiocho (133), Dalton Minnick (141), Ethan Hardy (149), Gaetano DeLeonardis (165), Cade Linn (174), Brady Ross (184), Nick Copley (197), and Gavin Shamblin (HWT).
Riding the momentum of the strong opening victory, the Pioneers also powered through Brockport. In that match, wins on the mat were posted by Lucas Talley (133), Sean Johnson (141), Kolbi Hamilton (149), Wiley Houser (157), DeLeonardis (165), Linn (174), Isaiah Casto (184), Devan Gauldin (197), and Shamblin (HWT).
Glenville closed the evening with three wrestlers taking wins in the battle with Buffalo; the defending national champion Quiocho, DeLeonardis, and Shamblin. For the day, Shamblin was a perfect 3-0, with Quiocho, DeLeonardis, and Linn all going 2-0 for the event.

The Pioneers are back in action Saturday, returning to the Waco Center for the Glenville Invitational. The event will be a large affair, as there will be 11 teams competing in the tournament. First whistle is set for 9 a.m.
