Preview: Lady Pioneers Look to Bounce Back at Charleston

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball looks to bounce back from their 100-89 defeat to No. 16 WVSU on Saturday as they travel to Charleston tomorrow (Nov. 21) for a matchup with the Golden Eagles. The Lady Pioneers won two of three against UC last season, including the MEC Tournament Championship game.

THE OPPONENT 
CHARLESTON 

The Golen Eagles enter (1-3, 0-1 MEC) following an MEC-opening loss to Concord 54-44 on Saturday. UC opened the season with a 52-49 win over Kutztown but has since lost three in a row. 

Tianni Kelly is in her fourth season leading the Golden Eagles. In her first three seasons at the helm, Kelly led UC to three-consecutive MEC Championship game appearances, two MEC Championships and an Atlantic Regional Championship. Kelly has also gotten Charleston into the NCAA Tournament in all three seasons. She was previously an assistant at Valdosta State and Florida Southern. 

As a team, UC is only averaging 50.3 PPG. Purdue-Northwest transfer Taylor Austin is the leading scorer at 9.5 PPG and is first on the team in assists at 2.3 APG. Nia Vanzant is second on the squad in points, averaging 9.0 PPG. Clarrissa Francis is averaging 6.3 PPG and 6.3 RPG, leading the team in rebounds.  

THE LADY PIONEERS 
GLENVILLE STATE 

The Lady Pioneers come in (3-1, 0-1 MEC) after falling to West Virginia State on Saturday. Prior to the loss, GSU had won the first three games of the year by an average of 23.3 points. 

Hya Haywood leads GSU in scoring, averaging 17.8 PPG while also swiping 4.3 steals per game (SPG). Wheeling transfer Lauren Calhoun is second on the squad in points (12.8 PPG) and leads the team in rebounding at 7.3 RPG. Kamiyah Lyons (11.8 PPG) and Chalon Miles (11.5) are also averaging double figures with Dream Cherry (9.8 PPG) nearing double digits. The Lady Pioneers are 2nd in the country in turnovers forced at 35.8 per game.
