Pioneers Pick Up Win Over Regionally Ranked Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Glenville State Football team went on the road this afternoon and picked up a 13-10 victory over regionally ranked Frostburg State at Bobcat Stadium. The matchup was fairly even as the Bobcats finished with 370 yards of total offense and the Pioneers had 358 yards of total offense as time expired.

1st Quarter
The game opened up with both teams being forced to punt on their first drives. The Pioneers punted on their second drive as well, however that wasn't the case for Frostburg on their second drive. On a second and nine at the GSU 46-yard line, FSU's Evan Branch broke away for a big touchdown run to score the first points of the game.

2nd Quarter
A drive that started in the opening quarter, GSU was able to punch it in from the one-yard line with Alfred Menjor after a big 24-yard reception by Tariq Miller to set the Pioneers up at the goal line. GSU's extra point would be missed to keep it at 7-6. After a defensive stop, Glenville State muffed the punt and gave the ball right back to FSU. The defense came up big once again as Evan Jackson went up to pick off Myles Fulton. Neither side mustered together any more offense for the remainder of the half.

Stats At The Half
Frostburg State ran for 129 yards in the 1st Half compared to the Pioneers 59 yards on the ground. Through the air, Anthony Garrett had 133 passing yards for the Pioneers.

3rd Quarter
The start of the 2nd Half was much like the start of the game with both squads being forced to punt, going three and out. On Glenville State's second drive of the new half, they were able to move the ball all the way down to the FSU 14 but Layman's kick was blocked.

4th Quarter
The Bobcats wasted a lot of time in their 4th Quarter drive that put FSU down to the one-yard line but the Pioneers were able to hold them to a field goal, staying within one score still at 10-6. Glenville State trotted out the offense with 6:34 left in the game, starting out the drive at the GSU 28. A few big plays and a face mask got GSU into the redzone.

From there, Garrett connected with Tariq Miller for 11 yards and Alfred Menjor gave the Pioneers their first lead of the game with under four minutes left on a seven-yard TD run. An interception by Dane Lynch on the next drive looked to close the game out but Frostburg pocketed all their timeouts, stopping the Pioneers on their drive to get the ball back with about two minutes remaining. FSU drove down the field to the GSU 25, setting up for a potential game-tying 42-yard field goal. The kick would fall short, securing the 13-10 win for Glenville State.

The Final Stats
Anthony Garrett threw for 188 yards with a long of 53 yards. Alfred Menjor carried the ball 23 times, totaling 132 yards and two touchdowns. Tariq Miller led the receiving core with five receptions for 88 yards. Zion Barnette added 50 yards on two catches. On the defensive end, Seth Arnold added to his team leading tackle total with nine. Jacob Clark chimed in with seven and both Shaun Sterling Jr. and Steve Bradshaw finished with six. Four different Pioneers brought in an interception as well.

The Bobcats played two different QB's, being led by Graham Walker's 115 yards on 11 completions. Evan Branch had 96 rushing yards and one touchdown. Owen Doyle led the team in carries with 13 but only had 41 rushing yards. Jeremiah Gibson had himself a day, pulling in six receptions for 94 yards. Defensively, Wylan Harich led the Bobcats with six tackles. Five other Bobcats recorded five tackles in the loss. Colby Street finished with four tackles and an interception also.

Up Next For The Pioneers
The Pioneers close out the season next Saturday against West Virginia Wesleyan at home with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
