Preview: Women’s Basketball Back at Home for Matchup with Carson-Newman

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball returns to the hardwood tomorrow (Dec. 30) for a non-conference matchup with South Atlantic Conference (SAC) foe Carson-Newman. The one and only time the two squads previously met was on January 3, 2004 when the then #5 ranked Lady Pioneers defeated CNU 67-64 on the road.

THE OPPONENT 
CARSON-NEWMAN 

The Eagles enter (8-2) and are winners in five of their last six games, previously defeating Saginaw Valley 57-51 on Dec. 19. Carson-Newman holds a top 25 win over #23 Wingate 93-64 earlier in the season. 

Mike Mincey is in his 14th season leading the Eagles. Last season broke Mincey's five-straight seasons of taking CNU to the NCAA Tournament as they finished 17-12. In total, he has taken the Eagles to the NCAA Tournament six times. In 2017-18, the Mincey-led CNU Eagles made it to the program's first Elite Eight and set 12 school records in one of the best seasons in school history. Prior to taking over Carson-Newman, he had stints as a HC at the high school level and as an assistant at the Division I ranks (East Tennessee State). 

Braelyn Wykle leads the Eagles in scoring at 19.5 PPG while also adding 3.6 RPG and 2.2 APG. Wykle is just eight points shy of taking over as the program's all-time leading scorer. Lindsey Taylor is the only other Eagle averaging double figures at 12.8 PPG. Taylor leads the efforts on the glass, pulling down 6.1 RPG. Tori Rutherford is adding 6.5 PPG, 3.3 APG, 3.1 RPG and 2.0 SPG as well. 

THE LADY PIONEERS 
GLENVILLE STATE 

The Lady Pioneers come in (7-4) following a 110-86 win against Washington Adventist on Dec. 18. GSU had lost their previous two games before getting back to their winning ways. 

Lauren Calhoun leads the squad in scoring (17.1 PPG) and rebounding (8.5 RPG) while shooting 58% from the field. Hya Haywood averages 16.8 PPG and leads the team in assists (2.5 APG) and steals (3.0 SPG). Zhordan Shannon is scoring 9.6 PPG and Chalon Miles is averaging 8.9 PPG to aid the Lady Pioneer offense.
