No.5 Lady Pioneers Prepare for Weekend Conference Clash Against Wheeling University

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team is back on the road traveling north to face the Cardinals of Wheeling University. Coach Stephen's squad will be looking for the 22nd win of the season. With the Lady Pioneers in sole control of first in the conference standings, GSU can continue to create separation.

A Look at Your Lady Pioneers

Glenville has already faced Wheeling University this season. The Lady Pioneers came out on top 84-68. The January matchup was the closest since the 2016-17 season. While GSU scored 20 or more points in three of the four quarters, the Cardinal's offensive production was able to keep up.

The Lady Pioneers backcourt duo Mickayla Perdue and Breanna Campbell combined for 58 points. After only making two threes in the first two quarters Glenville found their rhythm tripling their total in the final two quarters. For the 14th time this season, GSU also forced 25 or more turnovers. 

With Glenville having a high-power offense the Lady Pioneers have one of the best scoring margins in the country. Coach Stephens's squad on average is outsourcing opponents by 21.1 points per game. The press has continued to be effective in leading to high-quality shots. Glenville State is producing 16 steals per contest which is second in all of Division II.

A Look at the Cardinals

Since the first meeting back in January Wheeling went on a five-game winning streak. However, the Cardinals are 1-4 in their last five. While WU has faced Charleston and West Virginia State they have also lost to Concord and West Virginia Wesleyan.

The Cardinals are coming off a 75-68 loss to the Mountain Lions. Wheeling was in control for most of the contest but a 33-point fourth quarter by Concord sealed the deal. Shamia Strayhorn led the team in scoring with 18 points.

Wheeling continues to have one of the best interior defenses in the conference. Through 23 games the Cardinals are holding opponents to a MEC-best 38.3% from the field. Coach Kowalska's squad has been disciplined when it comes to fouling as well. On average Wheeling, University is only committing 17.4 fouls per game which is third in the league.
