GSU Men’s Basketball Picks Up Their Tenth Conference Win over Wheeling University

Wheeling, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball team picked defeated the Cardinals of Wheeling University 98-95. While the Pioneers shot 37.9% from beyond the arc Coach Caldwell's squad would make 11 threes throughout the contest. Glenville having one of their best nights from the free throw line was able to come out on top late.

GSU was able to strike first with a layup by Freddie Word. Wheeling taking advantage of some early miscues made by the Pioneers rattled off consecutive shots inside the paint to take a 6-2 advantage. While the Cardinals held on to their six-point lead throughout the early minutes, Glenville was able to shrink it down to one before the first media timeout. 

Coming out of the under-15 media timeout the Pioneers were able to build a six-point advantage of their own at the 13:20 mark. With either team's largest lead not reaching the double digits mark, both squads went back and forth trading blows. Glenville State at the 10:42 mark would take their largest lead of the first half and game 30-23. 

Jamarvious Jones was on fire from three in the first half hitting four from beyond the arc. Later on in the half Jones would hit three consecutive threes providing the Pioneer's offense a much-needed spark off the bench. GSU remained in control of the contest until the final six minutes.

While Glenville State had the lead heading into the half, the Cardinals once again were able to build their own lead. With Wheeling holding on to a four-point advantage the waning minutes of the first half proved to be a battle. Jaelin Johnson's layup was the final blow putting GSU up 48-47.

Coming out of the half Wheeling jumped to a seven-point advantage scoring 12 of the first 14 points. The Cardinals were able to hold on to their advantage for most of the second half. While Glenville would take a slight lead but Wheeling had the answer and multiple times jumped out to a multiple-possession advantage.

During the final ten minutes, the Pioneers swung the momentum in their favor. Just as the Cardinals did in the first 20 minutes GSU continued to hang around. From the 5:08 mark on Glenville had the lead. However, with it being a four-point game the Pioneers still had to make shots and hit their free throws. In the final minute, GSU was perfect from the charity stripe going 4-4.

Jamarvious Jones led the Pioneers in scoring with a new career-high 27 points. Jones also finished the contest with just three rebounds shy of a double-double. Freddie Word once again had a double-double scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Junior Jacquez Yow chipped in with 15 points as well.
