No. 4 Lady Pioneers Clinch MEC Regular Season Title With Win over Charleston

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team defeated the University of Charleston Golden Eagles 78-51. With the win, the Lady Pioneers have won ten in a row and clinched the 2023 MEC Regular Season title. This also marks Glenville's 14th conference title in the program's history.

The first quarter of tonight's contest proved to be a battle with both squads not making a bucket until the 7:30 mark. Charleston struck first with a layup inside the paint by Trinity Palacio. GSU's offense got going with a pair of free throws by junior guard Mickayla Perdue. At the first media timeout, both teams had only combined for 12 points. UC had a slight advantage of 7-5.

Before the end of the first quarter, the Lady Pioneers were able to jump out to a five-point lead. Hya Haywood's five points in the first quarter helped GSU build momentum heading into the second. During the final five minutes of the quarter, Glenville got out in transition scoring six points from turnovers. 

Early on in the second quarter, the Lady Pioneers took an eight-point advantage 20-12. UC with a layup and a three brought the game back to within three. However, Coach Stephens's squad jumped out to a double-digit lead. A 12-2 run gave GSU their largest advantage of the half 32-19. A pair of free throws by the Golden Eagles cut it down to 11 before heading into the half.

Charleston would score first in the third quarter bringing the Lady Pioneers' lead down to single digits. Glenville after allowing the early score kept their advantage to double digits for the remainder of the quarter. With GSU outsourcing UC by three, the Lady Pioners heading into the final quarter of play up 52-38.

In the fourth quarter, Glenville's offense exploded scoring 26 points. Throughout the night the Lady Pioneers produced offense off of turnovers but in the fourth GSU scored a game-high 14 points from turnovers. Glenville State's defense in the fourth was able to lockdown UC as well holding the Golden Eagles to 13.

Hya Haywood finished the contest with 19 points and was one point off of tying her season high. Haywood also finished with a team-high five steals. Mickayla Perdue led the Lady Pioneers in scoring with 22 points. Breanna Campbell would be the third GSU player in double-figures producing 19.
