No. 5 Lady Pioneers Hosts the Hilltoppers in Mid-Week MEC Clash

Glenville W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team is back on their home court to take on the West Liberty Hilltoppers. The Lady Pioneers are looking for their 21st win of the season and their 15th of the conference season. With the Hilltoppers two games behind Glenville, Wednesday's conference matchup is set to have serious implications in the standings.

A Look at the Lady Pioneers

In recent history, Glenville has come out on top against West Liberty in every matchup since the 2015-2016 season. During the 2015-16 season, the Hilltoppers took the regular season series capping a three-game streak. The Lady Pioneers were able to withstand the WLU test at the ARSC back in January. 

Last week the Lady Pioneers defeated the Bobcats of Frostburg State 90-74. With this win, GSU took the regular series win against FSU. Breanna Campbell had an impressive performance for the Glenville finishing with a team-high 26 points. Campbell also grabbed seven rebounds and six assists in the winning effort. 

This is the sixth consecutive season for the Lady Pioneers to have twenty wins during the regular season. In the last four games, GSU is averaging 96.7 points per game. Consistently throughout the season, Glenville has ranked atop of standings for points per contest. Through 22 games the LadyPioneers rank first in all of Division II. 

GSU By The Numbers
  • 16.8: Mickayla Perdue is seventh in the league for points per contest and has been GSU's leading scorer. 
  • 50.4%: Breanna Campbell is currently fifth in the conference for field goal percentage. 
  • 2.2: Hya Haywood is ranked sixth in the conference for steals per game.
  • 32.8%: GSU sits third in the league for three-point percentage.
  • 43.3%: Since the start of the new year Cabria Lewis has been solid from beyond the arc.

A Look at West Liberty

Since the last match between the Glenville Lady Pioneers and West Liberty Hilltoppers, WLU has had a few well-earned wins. They took the University of Charleston into overtime last week to take a much-needed win and tie up their conference record with UC and West Virginia State University. 

In their most recent game against the UC Golden Eagles, WLU made their free throws down the stretch to come out on top. The Hilltoppers were lights out from three shooting 50% from deep while making 12 three-pointers.  Senior Sonia Sarda led West Liberty in scoring with 25 points. 

The Hilltoppers have been the best defensive-rebounding team in the conference grabbing 29 defensive rebounds per game. West Liberty has also distributed the ball well with their dominant guard play. Through 22 games Coach Cooper's squad is producing 19.0 assists per game. The Hilltopper's 19 assists per contest have them ranked first in the MEC and third in the country.

  • 6.2: The Hilltoppers are ranked fourth in the Mountain East Conference for their scoring margin. 
  • 50.4%: Karly McCutcheon is currently sixth in the conference for field goal percentage. 
  • 70.3%: Arriana Manzay is twelfth in the MEC for free throw percentage. 
  • 80.1: As a team, WLU has the third-best offense in the conference and sits seventh in the nation for points per contest. 
  • 64: Grace Faulk has made the fourth-most threes in the league this season.
