Pioneers Fall In Close Home Contest Against #12 West Liberty

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball team fell in close one to the #12 Hilltoppers of West Liberty 82-70. The Pioneers Jay Scott had a career night producing 22 points off the bench in 22 minutes. While GSU would the WLU to a new season-low 24% from three, the Hilltoppers in the second half had 16 more shots from the field.

Out of the gate West Liberty was able to score on their first possession of the night. Bryce Butler missed his attempt from three but Malik Mckinney got the offensive board and put pack. However, the Pioneers were able to blow-for-blow with the Hilltoppers answering every made shot Before the first media timeout of the half Jamarvious Jones hit a three to tie it up 11-11. 

At the 14:29 mark, GSU took their first lead of the contest. While West Liberty tied it back up an 8-1 run by Glenville boosted the Pioneers to a seven-point advantage. During the stretch, Jay Scott hit back-to-back threes starting the contest 2-2 from deep. 

Glenville State would hold on to its lead throughout the first quarter. This Time Scott started a dominant stretch for the Pioneers. The Milwaukee, Wi. native's jumper outside of the paint began a 10-0 run giving Coach Calwell's squad the lead 37-22. In the waning minutes of the first half, the Hilltoppers started to connect from deep. West Liberty produced two of their three three-pointers of the half in the final four minutes. The nationally ranked Toppers shrunk GSU's advantage down to six but, a buzzer-beater by Jacquez Yow put the Pioneers up eight heading into the half.

Coming out of the half in the first five minutes West Liberty found a way to make it a one-possession game. A crucial three off the bench by Jay Scott swung the momentum in favor of Glenville. With an 8-2 swing the Pioneers led 56-48 with 14:41 left. 

With Bryce Butler and Christan Montague finding their offensive rhythm in the second half, the Hilltoppers tied the contest and eventually had their first lead since the early minutes of the game. Glenville State continued to fight just as they did in the first half until a cold spell in the final five minutes plague the Pioneers. With GSU's miscues and four-minute scoring drought, West Liberty was able to score 14 of the last 16 points.

Junior guard Jay Scott had a team-high 22 points for Glenville and grabbed three rebounds. Jordan Turbo Smith was the only other Pioneer in double digits with 13 points. Jacquez Yow Once again a force inside the paint produced three blocks and scored nine points.
