Lady Pioneers Take on the University of Tampa Spartans in the Elite Eight

SAINT JOESPH, Mo. - Glenville State Women's Basketball postseason run continues against the Spartans of the University of Tampa. The Pioneers are in the Elite Eight for the fourth time in program history. GSU throughout the postseason has forced turnovers and rebounded the ball well. 

A Look at the Lady Pioneers

Glenville State has been one of the hottest teams in the country winning 17 straight contests. With Coach Stpehen's squad having their third 30-win-plus season in the past ten years the postseason accolades continue to roll in. Both Breanna Campbell and Mickayla Perdue made the MEC and Atlantic Regional All-Tournament Teams. 

The Lady Pioneers continue to have one of the top offenses in the country. On average GSU is producing 87.8 points per game. Glenville has been able to consistently produce on the offensive end shooting 42.9% from the field. Glenville State also has been able to make 10.5 threes per game which is third in all of Division II. 

GSU by the Numbers
  • 108: Mickayla Perdue leads the country in made threes this season. 
  • 17.9: Breanna Campbell and Mickayla Perdue are tied for fifth in the MEC for points per contest.
  • 27.3: The Lady Pioneers force the most turnovers in the nation. 
  • 15.7: Glenville State sits 12th in Division II for offensive rebounds per game.
  • 151: Breanna Campbell has been lights out from the free throw line making the ninth most in the country.

A Look at the Spartans

Tampa similarly to Glenville has been on fire winning their last 22 contests in a row. Throughout the season the Spartans have faced two nationally-ranked opponents and won both games. Tampa is coached by West Virginia native Tom Jessee who enters his 21st season under the helm. Jessee over his 20-plus seasons with the Spartans he has captured seven Sunshine State Conference titles. 

Throughout the 2022-23 season, Coach Jessee's squad has been one of the top rebounding teams in the country. On average the Spartans are grabbing 29.9 defensive rebounds per game which is sixth in Division II.  While Tampa only attempts 13.4 threes per game they have one of the best three-point percentages in the nation shooting 37.4% from deep.

Tampa by the Numbers 
  • 2: Sydney Kin and Melijah Sullivan were selected to the WBCA All-American Team
  • 20: Sydney Kin has the fourth most double-doubles in the country.
  • 50: Audrey Ramsey leads the Spartans in made threes this season. 
  • 169: Ramsey also has been one of the Spartans' best distributors ranking seventh in Division II for assists.
  • -1.52: On average the Spartans are losing the turnover battle by almost two turnovers.
