Pioneers Advance to Quarterfinals of the 2023 Mountain East Conference Tournament

Wheeling, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball team defeated the Cardinals Wheeling University 96-84 securing a spot in the quarter-finals. The Pioneers were able to defend the three well holding Wheeling to 24% shooting from deep. Glenville would produce 18 points off the bench with De' Ante Petree scoring 11. GSU Will play #2 seed Fairmont State this Friday at 12:00 PM. 

Glenville started the game out on a 7-0 run scoring at ease against the Cardinals. While Freddie Word did not score during this stretch, he was able to initiate the offense by forcing turnovers. Jaelin Johnson got on the board early hitting a three from the corner.

After the Pioneer's hot start Wheeling started to find their own rhythm. The Cardinals at the 14:55 mark took their first lead of the contest with a Marcus Johnson Layup. Both squads continued to trade buckets in the first half. 

GSU was able to produce another run stringing 11 consecutive points together to take a seven-point lead before the under-10 media timeout. During this stretch, the Pioneers hit three consecutive threes. Coming out of the media timeout De' Ante Petree made a layup inside the paint increasing the GSU's control of the contest. However, Wheeling continued to find ways to shrink the advantage down to a single possession. 

Coach Caldwell's squad ramped up their offensive production in the final five minutes. GSU continued to make threes with Jamarvious Jones and De' Ante Petree hitting shots from beyond the arc. Before heading into the half the Pioneers led by 18 points 52-34. 

Coming out of the half, Glenville was able to consistently hold onto a 20-point advantage early on. With Wheeling being one of the best second-half teams in the conference, The Cardinals a battled to shrink the lead to 13. Glenville continued to stay hot from deep and got to the lane helping them take their largest lead of the game 90-65 

Glenville would hold onto their advantage, but Wheeling's offense also continued to make shots. With the Cardinals scoring 10 of the last 12 points, the Pioneers held on to win 96-84.

The Pioneers wrapped up tonight's contest with three players finishing with 20 or more points. Jordan Turbo Smith lead GSU with 27 points and was two rebounds shy of a double-double. Junior guard Freddie Word shot an efficient 7-12 from the field finishing the game with 22 points. Jacquez Yow would be close behind with 20 points while grabbing five boards.
