Lady Pioneers Postseason Run Comes to an End Falling to Ashland

SAINT JOESPH, Mo. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team fell to the #1 Ashland University Eagles 76-67. The Lady Pioneers shot 34.3% from the field and were out-rebounded 52-32. Glenville trailed by 20 in the third quarter but cut the Eagles lead down to three in the fourth quarter. With Ashland hitting shots down the stretch they were able to close out the contest.

Out of the gate, both teams jockeyed for an early advantage but kept each other in check. The Lady Pioneers got the board early with a jumper by Mickayla Perdue. Perdue had a stellar first quarter scoring ten of Glenville's first 12 points. Heading into the first media timeout it would be all tied 10-10. With Glenville State ending the quarter on a scoring drought Ashland had a slight advantage.

While the Lady Pioneers forced 15 turnovers in the first half, Ashland's defense was able to slow down GSU. Coach Stephens's squad would shoot a higher percentage in the second quarter but the Eagles held Glenville to just 13 shots from the field. With Ashland rebounding the ball at a high rate they were able to close the quarter on a 12-5 run heading into the half up by 14.

Coming out of the half Ashland extended their advantage to 20. However, the Lady Pioneers started to erase the Eagle's double-digit lead. Starting with a pair of Mickayla Perdue free throws, Glenville ended the quarter on a 12-4 run. Breanna Campbell had a slow start to the contest but got going in the third quarter.

The Eagles once again took a double-digit lead at the 7:45 mark in the fourth quarter. Throughout the next four minutes, the Lady Pioneers continued to battle. A Layup by Breanna Campbell was able to start another stretch of stellar play for Glenville. With GSU producing an 11-2 run Ashland's 20-point advantage shrunk to three.

At the 2:43 mark, Glenville took advantage of the Eagles going 1-2 from the free throw line hitting a jumper making it a one-possession game once more. With the Lady Pioneers not hitting shots from the field until the very end, Ashland was able to hold onto the victory.

Breanna Campbell led Glenville in scoring with 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Mickayla Perdue was close behind with 20 points while shooting 53% from the field. Down the stretch, Hya Haywood hit two crucial threes for the Lady Pioneers.
