Preview: Lady Pioneers Carry Four-Game Winning Streak Into New Week

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball will carry their four-game winning streak into the new week with matchups at home against Wheeling tomorrow (Jan. 17) and on the road against West Liberty on Saturday (Jan. 20). The Lady Pioneers have yet to play the Cardinals or the Hilltoppers this year.

THE OPPONENTS 
WHEELING 
The Cardinals enter (11-3, 6-1 MEC) and are winners of their last three. WU started the year out (8-0) but dropped three in a row before winning three-straight. 

Anna Kowalska is in her second season leading the Wheeling WBB program. In her first season with the Cardinals, WU went (14-15, 12-10 MEC) and received a first round bye in the MEC Tournament before falling to Charleston in the Quarterfinals. Kowalska came to WU following a one-year stint as HC at Life University. Before Life, she was the HC at WVU Tech for three seasons and has experience as an assistant at WVU Tech and Director of Basketball Operations at Kent State. 

Shamia Strayhorn is one of two Cardinals averaging double figures, leading the team with 13.6 PPG. Briarly Rogers is second on the squad in scoring at 12.1 PPG. Rachel Wilson is first on the team in rebounding, pulling down 6.7 RPG while also adding 8.4 PPG. Kenzie Dalton scores just 5.6 PPG but averages a team leading 4.1 APG. 

WEST LIBERTY 
The Hilltoppers come in (6-8, 4-3 MEC) after splitting last week with Frostburg State (W, 84-77) and #9 Fairmont State (L, 89-72). WLU has lost six of their last seven entering the new week and will travel to Concord tomorrow before meeting with the Lady Pioneers on Saturday. 

Kyle Cooper is in his seventh season at the helm of the Hilltopper WBB program. Cooper has led the Hilltoppers to three winning seasons and he holds a winning record (98-81) since taking over in 2017-18. Last season marked the second-consecutive 15-win season in conference play. Prior to taking over, Cooper was the lead assistant at WLU under Lynn Ullom for four seasons. He also has experience as a GA at WVU under Mike Carey, Director of WBB Operations at Ohio University and as an assistant at Wheeling. 

Four Hilltoppers are averaging double digits, led by Corinne Thomas' 18.4 PPG. Thomas also leads the team in assists at 3.8 APG. Karly McCutcheon (13.5 PPG), Bailee Smith (11.2 PPG) and Jenna Riccardo (10.0 PPG) are the other Hilltoppers averaging double digits. Ricardo is the leading rebounder on the team at 5.6 RPG and Thomas is second on the team at 5.2 RPG. 

THE LADY PIONEERS 
GLENVILLE STATE
 
The Lady Pioneers are (10-4, 4-3 MEC), coming in riding a four-game winning streak. Last week, GSU defeated D&E by 24 and WVWC by 29. 

GSU is led by Hya Haywood (16.8 PPG, 2.8 APG) and Lauren Calhoun (15.9 PPG) on the offensive end. Calhoun is grabbing a team leading 8.2 RPG and Haywood is first on the team in steals at 3.5 SPG. The Lady Pioneers are scoring 90.8 PPG and forcing a nation's best 32.9 turnovers per game.
