2024 Season
West Liberty is having a rough start to the season, coming into Saturday's game (2-5, 2-3 MEC) after beating West Virginia Wesleyan College, 21-9, on Saturday.
Head Coach
Roger Waialae is in his 20
th season as Head Coach of West Liberty's Football team.
Hilltoppers Offense
Levi Gullion leads the Hilltoppers on offense this season with 899 passing yards and seven touchdowns, with his longest pass being 81 yards long. The ground game is led by Hunter Patterson, who has 435 rushing yards and four touchdowns, with his longest rush being 80 yards. Ben Turner leads the Hilltoppers through the air with 584 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Some other notable offensive players for the Hilltoppers are Marquez Hurst (212 receiving yards and three TD), Will Balgo (194 receiving yards and one TD) and AJ Barmer (193 rushing yards and one TD).
Hilltoppers Defense
On defense, the Hilltoppers are led by Trent Crawford, who has 31 solo tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, five pass breakups and five forced fumbles, being a work horse on defense for West Liberty. DJ Johnson leads the team in interceptions with two on the season. Three different Hilltoppers are tied for most sacks on the season with 3.5 sacks. Some other notable players on defense are Taison Fa'Asuamanu (21 solo tackles, 5.5 TFLs, and three sacks), Nolan Shimp (18 solo tackles and three TFLs), and Chris Harm (13 solo tackles, three TFLs, one Int).
Hilltoppers Special Teams
Tyler Waddell is 5-5 on field goals this season with his longest kick being 40 yards. DJ Johnson has punted for 927 yards with his longest punt being 70 yards long. Josh Vigne is averaging 18 yards per kick return for the Hilltoppers this season.
THE PIONEERS
GLENVILLE STATE
2024 Season
The Pioneers enter (3-4, 3-2 MEC) following last week's 24-21 victory at Concord. GSU currently sits tied for 4
th in the MEC standings.
Pioneers Offense
Offensively,
Tariq Miller led the Pioneers last week as he posted two touchdowns, bringing him to six touchdowns and over 450 yards on the year.
Zavione Wood has been productive on the ground, averaging 4.8 yards per carry.
Naseem Pacheco has also pitched in three TD grabs on the year in 20 total receptions. Quarterback
Anthony Garrett is coming off of his best performance of the year after throwing three touchdowns last week and is looking to carry that momentum into the WLU game on Saturday.
Pioneers Defense
The Pioneers are coming off a great defensive performance, led by defensive end
Jamair Diaz. Diaz received national honors as he was named D2 Defensive Player of the Week, along with MEC Defensive Player of the Week after posting five TFL's, two sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery against Concord.
Shaun Sterling Jr. is anchoring the back end, recording another interception last week. On the season, Sterling has three interceptions, two pass breakups and 47 total tackles. Bridgeport product
Hayden Moore has recorded 21 solo tackles and 2.5 TFL's.
Pioneers Special Teams
On special teams,
Brody Layman has been productive, knocking through four field goals on the year and
Zander Watson has tallied four punts of over 50 yards, pinning nine punts inside the 20-yard line. In the return game,
Jeremiah King is averaging over 25 yards per return.
