Game Preview #9: Football Makes Trip to Wheeling for Fifth All-Time Meeting with Cardinals

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Glenville State Football looks to keep their two-game win streak alive on Saturday (Nov. 2) when the Pioneers make the trip up north to take on Wheeling.

THE OPPONENT
WHEELING

2024 Season
Wheeling comes into Saturday's matchup against the Pioneers (4-4, 3-3 MEC) after upsetting Frostburg State on Thursday, 26-25.

Head Coach
Zac Bruney is in his seventh season as the Head Coach of Wheeling. Bruney helped establish and take the program to where it is today.

Cardinals Offense
Javon Davis leads the Cardinals offense this season with 1,318 passing yards and 10 touchdowns. On the ground, the Cardinals are led by Steven Mitchell, who has 567 rushing yards and five touchdowns with his longest rush being 60 yards. The Cardinals receiving crew is led by Tre' Holloway, who has 648 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Some other notable offensive players for Wheeling are Chris Charles (438 receiving yards and four TDs), Dawaun Green (363 rushing yards and six TDs) and Dasyn Hores (182 receiving yards and one TD).

Cardinals Defense
On defense, the Cardinals are headlined by Jack Perry, who has 27 solo tackles, three tackles for loss, one and a half sacks and four breakups. Jusin Mcilwain leads the team in interceptions with four on the season. Leading the Cardinals in sacks this season is Awwal Osinuga with three. Some other notable players on defense for Wheeling are Jojo Holmes (22 solo tackles, 3.5 TFL and 48 total tackles), Mike Dahn (14 solo tackles, 1.5 TFL, and seven PBU) and Leonard Sherrod III (nine solo tackles, 2 INT, and four PBU).

Cardinals Special Teams
Joao Lima is 7-14 on field goals this season with his longest field goal being 37 yards. Trey Brady has punted for 1,096 yards on 30 punts with his longest punt being 49 yards. Tre' Holloway is averaging 28 yards on kick return with his longest being 99 yards long. Holloway has returned two kicks for touchdowns.

GLENVILLE STATE
2024 Season
The Pioneers enter (4-4, 4-2 MEC) after beating West Liberty, 37-14, on Saturday at Morris Stadium.

Pioneers Offense
Anthony Garrett has been solid all year long at quarterback for the Pioneers, completing 100 passes for 1,232 and 13 touchdowns. His favorite target has been Tariq Miller as Miller has been reliable but also a big-play hitter for GSU with seven touchdowns and a 20 yard per reception average. Amari Colon-Brown has busted onto the scene as of late, scoring a touchdown in last week's game against West Liberty. Elijah Palmer has also pitched in a TD to go along with 10 catches on the year. In the backfield, Zavione Wood leads the team in rushing with 412 and a long of 49 on the year. Markquan Rucker has also toted the ball 108 times for 401 yards with two touchdowns. Both backs are averaging over 50 yards per game, as the team has relied on the backs to lead the offense.

Pioneers Defense
On the Defensive side of the ball, Jamair Diaz has been a force along the edge as he is tied for the nation's leads in tackles for loss with 15.5 and second nationally in sacks with 9.5. Shaun Sterling Jr. leads the defensive secondary with three interceptions, two pass breakups and 51 total tackles. At linebacker, Hayden Moore is having a solid season with 2.5 TFL and 39 tackles, along with Brogan Brown's six TFL and 38 tackles. Isaiah Macklin recorded his first interception against WLU and has 33 tackles to go along with 4.5 TFL and one sack.

Pioneers Special Teams
Brody Layman knocked in another field goal last week, bringing him to five made field goals on the year. Zander Watson had another 50-yard punt, bringing his total to five punts of 50 or more yards on the year.
