Game Preview #11: Football Closes out Regular Season at West Virginia Wesleyan

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Glenville State Football is looking to lock up second place in the Mountain East Conference on Saturday (Nov. 16) as they take on the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m. in Buckhannon.

THE OPPONENT
WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN

2024 Season
West Virginia Wesleyan comes into Saturday's matchup (0-10, 0-7 MEC) after losing to the University of Charleston on Saturday, 21-69.

Head Coach
Dwayne Martin is in his fourth season as the Head Coach of the West Virginia Wesleyan Football program.

Bobcats Offense
On offense, the Bobcats are led by the man under center, Nathan Payne, who this season has 1,037 passing yards and nine touchdowns with his longest pass being for 63 yards. On the ground, the Bobcats are led by Kevin Mitchell, who has 208 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Wesley Sweeney has 383 receiving yards and two touchdowns at the receiver position. Some other notable players for the Bobcats on offense are Immanuel Scott (265 receiving yards and one touchdown), Deion King (225 receiving yards and three touchdowns) and Raphael Manning (198 rushing yards and one touchdown).

Bobcats Defense
On defense, the Bobcats are led by Riley Slaughter, who has 22 solo tackles, 6.5 TFL and one sack. Three different Bobcats are leading the team in interceptions with one apiece. Jaden Swiger has provided the most QB pressure for the Bobcats by leading the team in sacks with 3.5 sacks and two QB hits. Some other notable players on defense for the Bobcats are Brendon Baugh (20 solo tackles, one INT, one FF, and one FR), Corey Baugh (22 solo tackles and two TFL) and Marquis Phifer (17 solo tackles, one TFL, one PBU and 1 QBH).

Bobcats Special Teams
Cam Ceccotti is 4-5 on field goals this season with his longest make being from 38 yards. Camden Lawrence is the punter for the Bobcats and has punted for 2,129 yards, with his longest punt being 68 yards. On kick return is Immanuel Scott, who has accumulated 781 yards on kick returns and is averaging 22.97 yards per return.

THE PIONEERS
GLENVILLE STATE

2024 Season
GSU holds a record of (6-4) overall with a (6-2) mark in league play and has won four games in a row coming into the final weekend of the season.

Pioneers Offense
The Pioneers are coming off one of their best offensive outputs of the season against West Virginia State, scoring 40 points for the first time this year. Markquan Rucker and Zavione Wood continue to be a dynamic one-two punch at running back, as they both average over 50 yards on the ground per game. Rucker has punched in three touchdowns while Wood has two. Quarterback Anthony Garrett has played well down the stretch as he tallied three total touchdowns last week. On the season, Garrett is completing 54% of his throws and has connected on 19 touchdown passes. At receiver, Tariq Miller has been one of the most explosive players in the league, averaging over 17 yards per catc with a long of 77 and seven touchdowns. Amari Colon-Brown has really come on as of late, scoring a long touchdown last week, bringing his total to three on the year.

Pioneers Defense
Defensively, the Pioneers are led by players on all three levels of the defense. Shaun Sterling Jr. has been the most consistent piece as he has tallied 56 total tackles, three interceptions and 4.5 tackles for loss. Jamair Diaz has been nearly unlockable off the edge with his 19.5 TFL, 10.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. At linebacker, Hayden Moore continues to play well as he has totaled 51 tackles and 4.5 TFL on the year. Inside, Isaiah Macklin has been a force on the defensive line with six TFL and 44 total tackles.

Pioneers Special Teams
On special teams, Brody Layman knocked two more field goals through last week, bringing his season total to 7-9. Zander Watson continues to be consistent in the punt game, averaging 40 yards per punt on the year with five punts of 50 or more yards.
