Game 10 Preview: Pioneers, Yellow Jackets Meet for Sole Possession of Second Place in MEC

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Glenville State Football has a conference game with massive Mountain East Conference implications on Saturday (Nov. 9), hosting West Virginia State for senior day at Morris Stadium. Glenville State has a league record of (5-2), looking to continue positioning themselves well in the league standings. West Virginia State also holds a league record of (5-2).

THE OPPONENT
WEST VIRGINIA STATE

2024 Season
West Virginia State comes into Saturday's matchup (6-3, 5-2 MEC), beating Frostburg State, 38-24, last week to snap their two-game losing streak.

Head Coach
John Pennington enters his seventh year as the Head Football Coach at West Virginia State. Pennington has won over 40 games in his tenure with the Yellow Jackets.

Yellow Jackets Offense
Isaiah Bess leads the Yellow Jackets on offense with 1,695 passing yards and 14 touchdowns. On the ground, the Yellow Jackets are led by Joel Felder, who has 823 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. The Yellow Jackets are also led on the receiving end by Felder with his 470 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Some other notable players on offense for the Yellow Jackets are Justin Pessoa (810 rushing yards and five TDs), Amare Ary (380 receiving yards and five TDs) and Adrien Mosley (311 receiving yards and four TDs).

Yellow Jackets Defense
On defense, the Yellow Jackets are led by Tim Sanford II, who has 38 solo tackles, one tackle for loss, two interceptions and four pass breakups. Nick Blake leads the team in interceptions with six on the season. Two different Yellow Jackets lead the team in sacks with two sacks apiece. Some other notable players on defense for the Yellow Jackets are Nicholas Frannin (26 solo tackles, 1.5 TFL, two INT, and five PBU), LucRichard Rameau (23 solo tackles, 5.5 TFL, one sack, one PBU, and four QB hits) and Kameron Vargas (21 solo tackles, 1.5 TFL, two PBU and 1 FF).

Yellow Jackets Special Teams
Brennon Schmitt is 11-18 on field goals this season with his longest field goal being 50 yards long. Schmitt is also the punter for the Yellow Jackets and he has 1,250 punting yards with his longest punt being 65 yards long. Quientin Williams is the kick returner for the Yellow Jackets and is averaging 23 yards per return.

THE PIONEERS

2024 Season
The Pioneers come in (5-4, 5-2 MEC) and have won three in a row, with their most recent victory coming at Wheeling on Saturday.

Pioneers Offense
The Pioneers are coming off their best offensive performance of the year, with multiple contributors on both sides of the ball. Anthony Garrett has totaled upwards of 1,400 yards to go along with 14 touchdown passes on the year. Glenville State has been running the ball effectively all year, led by Markquan Rucker and Zavione Wood. Rucker has tallied 478 yards, while Wood has 474. Tariq Miller has been as explosive as they come at the receiver position, scoring seven touchdowns on the year and averaging over 17 yards per grab.   Naseem Pacheco has tallied four touchdowns, to go along with 24 receptions. Wood has been a threat out of the backfield as well with 10 catches on the year.

Pioneers Defense
On defense, Shaun Sterling Jr. has been consistent all year with his 39 solo tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions and two pass breakups. At linebacker, Hayden Moore has 45 total tackles three TFL and one sack. Jamair Diaz has been a force off the edge, tallying 43 total tackles, 17 TFL and 10.5 sacks. At the other linebacker spot, Brogan Brown has recorded 42 tackles, eight TFL, and two fumble recoveries. Sean Scott recorded another interception last week to bring his season total to two, as well as three PBU's. Along the interior, Isaiah Macklin has 39 tackles, 5.5 TFL and has recorded a sack.

Pioneers Special Teams
The specialists continue to be solid, as Brody Layman has made 71 percent of his kicks this season and Zander Watson continues to pin opponents deep in their own territory with 10 punts downed inside the twenty.
