GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Football team scored 20 points in the third quarter en route to a 40-14 victory over West Virginia State on senior day at Morris Stadium. With the win, the Pioneers improve to (6-2) in MEC play and take sole possession of second place in the league.
1st Quarter
Like last week, the Pioneers offense started out hot as
Anthony Garrett found
Amari Colon-Brown crossing through the back of the endzone on GSU's first drive, making it 7-0 early. After a pair of stops by the Pioneers defense, the score stayed at 7-0 at the end of the quarter.
2nd Quarter
Shortly after the new quarter began, Garrett nearly ran for a touchdown but was stopped just short. West Virginia transfer
Markquan Rucker took care of the rest, scoring from one yard out on the following playing as GSU led 14-0. On West Virginia State's ensuing drive, the run game was successful throughout, allowing the Yellow Jackets to get on the board with a seven-yard TD run to cut the deficit in half. Right before the end of the half,
Brody Layman connected from 43 yards out, putting GSU in front, 17-7, at the break.
3rd Quarter
The Yellow Jackets marched right down the field out of the locker room, scoring on just four plays and trimming the Pioneers led down to 17-14. A near six-minute drive was capped off by
Zavione Wood finding the endzone from 13 yards out, however a missed XP made it 23-14. Following a fumble by WVSU, GSU took full advantage of the short field with a 44-yard rushing touchdown by
Anthony Garrett to extend the lead to 30-14. A three and out by the Yellow Jackets put pressure on the WVSU defense and that was immediately felt when Garrett and
Amari Colon-Brown connected for a 66-yard TD. The score sat at 37-14 after three quarters of play.
4th Quarter
A much slower final quarter saw the Pioneers put three points on the board, this time from kicker
Brody Layman when he converted on a 45-yard field goal. The Pioneers defense forced two more turnovers in the quarter as well, both coming via a fumble. A few runs by
Jeremiah King ran out the clock as GSU grabbed the 40-14 victory.
