Preview: Lady Pioneers Head South to No. 15 Carson-Newman

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Lady Pioneers return from Christmas break and look to start 2025 off right with a matchup against Carson-Newman on the road on January 1st.

2024-25 Season
The 15th ranked Eagles are currently (10-2) overall with an (8-1) conference mark in the SAC. They are coming off a loss against 18th ranked North Georgia before Christmas break..

Head Coach
Mike Mincey is in his 14th season as the Head Coach of the Eagles. Mincey has 274 wins at the helm and advanced to the South Atlantic Conference Championship game and the Southeast Regional Championship in 2023-24. He has six 20+ win seasons, including a (32-3) finish and Elite Eight appearance in 2017-18.

The Eagles are led by Jennifer Sullivan, who averages just over 15 points per game as well as shooting 35% from three. Campbell Penland averages 13 points a game for the Eagles with four rebounds and she is shooting 43% from three-point range. Carson-Newman has two more double figure scorers, Tori Rutherford at 10.9 and Lindsey Taylor at 10.1.

The Lady Pioneers come into this matchup with an (8-3) overall record and (3-2) conference mark, previously defeating Frostburg State on Dec. 15.

GSU is led by Tynasia Bunting, averaging 14.8 points per game, to go along with 5.8 rebounds, 23 total steals and 14 total assists. Bunting is shooting 41% from the field this year. Dream Cherry is averaging 12 points per night and has made 27 threes thus far while shooting 35% from beyond the arc. Nwando Okigbo has been filling up the stat sheet for the Lady Pioneers with 11.9 PPG, 9.4 rebounds per game, 19 total assists and 23 total steals with a 40% clip from the field. True freshman Kenyah Stubbs (9.1 PPG) and Ashlyn Riley (8.1 PPG) are chipping in for GSU and Stubbs is also leading the team in total assists with 28.
