Game Preview #4: Football Welcomes UNC Pembroke for Hall of Fame Weekend

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Glenville State Football looks to add another win to their 1-0 MEC record after their comeback victory against Fairmont State last Thursday. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Morris Stadium.

THE OPPONENT
UNC PEMBROKE

2024 Season
UNC Pembrook comes into this game (0-3, 0-1 MEC) after losing their conference opener to the undefeated #19 Charleston Golden Eagles.

Head Coach
Mark Hall enters his second season as Head Coach for UNC Pembroke. In his debut season, he led the Braves to a (7-3) record and had 11 players earn All-MEC honors, including the MEC Defensive Player of the Year Jamae Blank and the MEC Offensive Freshman of the Year Sincere Baines.

Braves Offense
The Braves are led this year by Colin Johnson, who has 470 passing yards and five touchdowns on the season. Josiah Hayes leads the receiving core of the Braves with 147 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The ground game for the Braves is led by JaQuan Kelly, who has 93 rushing yards thus far. Josh Jenkins (117 receiving yards, one touchdown) and Sincere Baines (66 rushing yards, one touchdown) have added power to the Braves offense as well.

Braves Defense
Defensively, the Braves are led by James Blank, who enters the game with 15 solo tackles and three sacks. Behind him is Carlo Thompson with 10 solo tackles and Cameron Berry with two sacks. Darius Edmundson and D'Marcus Harrington have one interception each for the Braves.

Braves Special Teams
Punter Seth Bowen is averaging 46.2 yards per punt, including a long of 63 with three punts over 50 yards. Ty Woods and Jackson Hills have shared kicking duties as Hills is 1-1 on the year. Sincere Baines took one back 98-yards for a TD last week on a kickoff return as the dynamic playmaker is averaging 23.75 yards per return.

THE PIONEERS

2024 Season
The Pioneers are coming off a 17-14 win over Fairmont State in their last performance on September 19th in the Battle For The Bit.

Pioneers Offense
Offensively, the Pioneers are led by the rushing attack that involves multiple backs. Markquan Rucker has 45 carries for 184 yards, Zavione Wood has 28 carries for 105 yards and Jeremiah King has 12 carries for 35 yards. At the Quarterback position, Anthony Garrett has not been afraid to tuck the ball and take off, as he has 11 carries for 57 yards.

Through the air, Garrett has compiled 420 yards in three games to go along with four touchdowns. At receiver, the Pioneers are led by Tariq Miller, who has been must watch every time he touches the ball, tallying three touchdowns in just seven catches. Naseem Paheco has been a reliable target, racking up nine catches for 80 yards. At Tight End, Lucas Rippetoe has been consistent, making big catches for the Pioneers averaging, 11.3 yards per reception.

Pioneers Defense
Defensively, the Pioneers are led by reigning MEC Defensive Player of the Week, Shaun Sterling Jr. Sterling has recorded 23 total tackles to go along with one tackle for loss, two interceptions and one pass breakup. Jamair Diaz has been a force up front for the Pioneer defense, as he leads the MEC in sacks with 3.5, to go along with 4.5 TFL and 15 total tackles. At linebacker, Hayden Moore and Brogan Brown have been effective, recording 16 total tackles and 14 total tackles respectively. In the defensive backfield, Sean Scott has 16 total tackles and four TFL's. Mark Shepherd has eight total tackles to go along with three breakups and one interception.

Pioneers Special Teams
The Pioneer special teams have been a solid unit so far this season. Led by Zander Watts, averaging 42 yards per punt with a long of 69 and three punts downed inside the 20. Brody Layman came up clutch against FSU to give the Pioneers the lead late in the fourth quarter, drilling a 35-yard field goal. Jeremiah King has been solid returning kicks, averaging 28 yards per return.
