GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Football team won a thriller at Morris Stadium earlier today, defeating UNC Pembroke, 14-7. The Pioneers ran for nearly 200 yards on the ground to improve their record to (2-2, 2-0 MEC).
Â
1st Quarter
It was a defensive slugfest to begin the game, as both teams went three and out twice before the Braves picked up a first down on their third drive of the game, marking the first, first down of the contest. The drive came to an end when UNC Pembroke's 51-yard field goal attempt missed wide left.
Â
2nd Quarter
On the Pioneers ensuing possession, they were able to drive all the way down to UNCP five-yard line, thanks to a third down completion from
Anthony Garrett and a pair of costly penalties on the Braves. However, the field goal would be missed as the game stayed a 0-0 tie. A deep ball down the sideline and a Sincere Baines two-yard run put UNC Pembroke on the board, leading 7-0 with just over four minutes remaining in the half. Following a short drive by GSU, the Braves had a chance to extend their lead but another miss on a field goal attempt kept the game at 7-0 going into the locker room.
Â
3rd Quarter
In the opening drive of the new half, Glenville State used a 49-yard carry by
Zavione Wood and a balanced passing attack to score as Garrett found
Jeremiah King wide open from six yards out to tie it up at 7-7. Quick drives by the Pioneers and the Braves retained the tie heading into the final quarter of the play.
Â
4th Quarter
GSU got within the UNCP 30-yard line out of the quarter shift, but a stand by the Braves defense on 4th and 5 gave the ball back to UNC Pembroke. After another strong possession from the blue and white's defense, the Pioneer offense managed to put together a six-plus minute drive that ended in an eight-yard touchdown run from
Markquan Rucker, making it 14-7 GSU.
Mark Shepherd Jr. and
Sean Scott sealed the deal for the Pioneers, producing interceptions on back-to-back drives as Glenville State won, 14-7.
