Preview: Lady Pioneers Look to Keep it Rolling Against West Virginia State & Concord

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneers look to defend their home court this week and extend their four-game winning streak with two home matchups against MEC competition. GSU will host West Virginia State on Wednesday (Jan. 22) and Concord on Saturday (Jan. 25). The Lady Pioneers fell to WVSU earlier in the season and are set to meet the Mountain Lions for the first time this season after splitting with them in 2023-24.

THE OPPONENTS
WEST VIRGINIA STATE
2024-25 Season
The Yellow Jackets enter this matchup with a (7-8) overall record and a (3-6) mark in league play. WVSU is coming off a loss to West Virginia Wesleyan in their last outing.

Head Coach
Charles Marshall is in his ninth season as HC of the Yellow Jackets. Marshall led WVSU to their first-ever MEC Championship game in 2023-24, where the Yellow Jackets fell but they earned their second-straight NCAA Tournament bid.

Quick Look at The Yellow Jackets
WVSU is a balanced offensive attack as they have three players scoring in double-figures. Emyah Fortenberry and ZZ Russell both average 10.8 points per game while Fortenberry averages over 11 rebounds per contest, to go along with 16 blocked shots on the year. Russell has put up 75 threes this season and knocked down 20 of them. Shanley Woods is the other double figure scorer as she averages 10.4 PPG and is shooting 38 percent from deep.

CONCORD
2024-25 Season
The Mountain Lions are (8-8) overall while being just above .500 in MEC play at (5-4). Concord is coming off a overtime defeat at the hands of Wheeling on Saturday.

Head Coach
Tesla Southcott is in her third season at the helm for Concord. Southcott holds a career .500 coaching record (38-38), winning 17 games with a 6th place finish in the MEC last season. She previously served as an assistant coach for the Mountain Lions under Kenny Osborne.

Quick Look at The Mountain Lions
Abbie Smith leads the team in scoring with almost 20 points per game at 18.5 while playing mostly in the paint and capitalizing at the free-throw line. Smith is averaging a double-double with over 11 rebounds per contest and has blocked 11 shots. Skylar Davidson is returning to Glenville after being a part of the 2022 National Championship team and is averaging just under 12 PPG a game at 11.9 while shooting 44% from beyond the arc and recording 55 total steals. Sanaiya Morris is the final double-figure scorer for Concord, averaging 10.8 PPG, 36 total assists and 27 total steals.

THE PIONEERS
GLENVILLE STATE
2024-25 Season
Coming off four straight wins and looking to continue their undefeated season at home, the Lady Pioneers enter the week (12-4, 7-2 MEC). GSU is currently keeping pace with preseason favorite Fairmont State, tied atop the league standings. 

Quick Look at The Lady Pioneers
Tynasia Bunting is averaging 14 and a half points per game while shooting 42% from the field and 32% from three. Bunting is also averaging six rebounds and has 20 assists and 28 steals on the year. Nwando Okigbo is averaging a double-double for the Lady Pioneers with 12.8 points and 10.1 rebounds per night along with seson totals of 29 assists 28 steals and nine blocks. Dream Cherry has been a sharpshooter all year as she has made 38 threes and averages just over 12 points a game with 37 assists on the year. Kenyah Stubbs and Ashlyn Riley are both averaging eight points a game for GSU while both have over 25 steals on the year.
