SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Football team used four touchdowns from
Anthony Garrett and 142 yards of rushing from
Jeremiah King to earn their third-straight victory earlier today, beating Concord, 42-30, in the Pioneers annual Homecoming game. GSU totaled 474 yards of offense and did not turn the ball over, improving to (4-3, 3-1 MEC) on the year.
Â
1st Quarter
The Pioneer defense quickly got off the field in Concord's first drive, forcing a three-and-out and putting the ball in the hands of the blue and white. Glenville State scored in just three plays on their first drive, using a 55-yard rush and a 15-yard touchdown run from
Jeremiah King. After another quick stop from the Pioneer defense,
Anthony Garrett found
Tariq Meredith for 22 yards down the middle and
Naseem Pacheco for 17 yards before King finished off the drive to make it 14-0 just four and a half minutes in. Two drives later, the Mountain Lions were able to put their first points on the board after Tyler Mizzell carried the offense down the field and into the endzone on a 12-yard TD pass.
Â
2nd Quarter
Concord had their 50-yard field goal attempt fall short on their next drive before GSU sustained a three-plus minute drive that was finished off by Garrett finding
Tariq Miller for the 12-yard touchdown connection. The score pushed the Pioneer lead to 21-7. Both teams stalled from there until CU marched down the field and inside the redzone, eventually finishing off the half with a 28-yard field goal to make it 21-10 going into the locker room.
Â
3rd Quarter
After the Pioneers went three-and-out to start the second half, the Glenville State defense didn't allow the good field position that Concord obtained to bother them. A clash from
Jaiden McLendon Parker and
Shary Jefferson popped the ball out of running back Israel Rhodes' arm right into the waiting hands of
Kaevon Blanding. From there, the Pioneers pieced together a run-heavy drive that consisted over five minutes and was capped off with a
Koraun Perdue touchdown grab. However, Concord answered right back with a 63-yard touchdown run from QB Tyler Mizzell to trim the deficit back down to 11 at 28-17.
Â
For a third-straight drive, there was a score as the Pioneers were able add more points to the Nicholas County scoreboard on a phenomenal throw and catch from
Anthony Garrett and
Kordell Lewis, making it 35-17 right before the end of the quarter.
Â
4th Quarter
The Mountain Lions weren't ready to go away just yet with the start of the final stanza, as Mizzell connected with Que Moore for a 44-yard touchdown score. The Mountain Lions had two tries on their two-point attempt, but failed both.
Micah Brown opened the Pioneers following drive with a 38-yard run and Garrett tossed it to Perdue on a rollout with the 6-foot-6, 232-pound tight end doing the rest, stiff-arming one defender and trucking another on his way to his second receiving touchdown of the day, pushing the GSU advantage to 42-23.
Â
The offenses went quiet for almost 10 minutes, but a long drive from Concord that ended with a 13-yard passing touchdown made it a 12-point game with 2:51 remaining. The strong running game from Glenville State proved to be too much for CU in the closing minutes, securing the 42-30 victory for the Pioneers.
