Game Preview No. 8: Football Looks to Beat West Liberty on The Hilltop for First Time Since 2017

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Football is looking to end their three-game road losing streak at West Liberty as the Pioneers haven't beat the Hilltoppers on the Hilltop since 2017 with GSU losing the last three matchups (2019, 2021, 2023). Glenville State and West Liberty meet tomorrow (Oct. 25) at 1 p.m. inside West Family Stadium and on the Mountain East Conference Digital Network.

2025 Season
The Hilltoppers enter Saturday on a two-game winning streak and a (2-5, 2-2 MEC) record after dropping their first five matchups of the season. West Liberty most recently defeated West Virginia Wesleyan, 35-11, last week.

Hilltoppers Head Coach
Roger Waialae is in his 21st season leading the Hilltopper football program. He most recently picked up his 100th career win as the WLU head coach, ranking 2nd all-time in WLU history. Waialae has enjoyed plenty of success since taking over, with a majority coming during the program's time in the WVIAC. His 2009 team won a program-record 11 games and advanced to the NCAA DII Playoff Quarterfinals.
 
Hilltoppers Offense
Since taking over, quarterback Antevious Jackson is (2-0) as the starter and passed for 365 yards and four scores for the Hilltoppers. The former junior college QB ranks second on the team in rushing with 190 yards and two TDs on the ground. One of the league's fastest running backs leads WLU in rushing as Hunter Patterson is coming off of a big day at WVWC where he totaled 247 yards and three touchdowns. The 2024 All-MEC Second Team performer currently ranks 4th in the league in rushing yards (571), tied for 2nd in rushing touchdowns (7), 2nd in rushing yards per game (95.2) and 6th in average rushing yards per carry (6.1).
 
At receiver, Fairmont State transfer Trey Singleton leads the way with 445 yards (4th MEC), 27 receptions (6th MEC), three touchdowns (9th MEC) and 3.9 receptions per game (6th MEC). Patterson is a serious threat out of the backfield as a receiver as well, ranking third on the team in receiving yards with 205 and second on the squad in receptions with 20. Jaylin Marcum (18 receptions, 228 yards) and Osama Hurst (17 receptions, 138 yards) have also been involved in the offense.
 
Hilltoppers Defense
The Hilltoppers trot out one of the league's best defensive lineman in Grant Thompson, as the 6-3, 240-pound sophomore is first in the league in tackles for loss (9.0) and tied for 1st in sacks with 4.0. Nolan Shimp is top 10 in the conference in tackles with 4 while Jamison Holliday has had a nice year with 40 stops. In addition, seven different Hilltoppers have forced a league-leading seven fumbles this season.
 
The backend of the defense is led by Charles Coy III (two interceptions, two pass breakups), Justice Lawrence (four pass breakups) and Kenshiro Christopher (three pass breakups). Defensive back Nasir Lawrence has also been active in stopping the run as the senior out of North Carolina is fourth on the team in tackles with 38 while adding a forced fumble.
 
Hilltoppers Special Teams
In total, WLU kickers are 1-for-5 on the season in field goals with Morgan Williamson hitting the lone kick from 34 yards out. Chase Hile handles kickoff duties, averaging 52.3 yards per kickoff while Williamson is also the team's punter, averaging 39.9 yards per punt with a long of 51.

2025 Season
The Pioneers are taking a three-game winning streak into enemy territory and a (4-3, 3-1 MEC) record. Glenville State most recently handled Concord last Saturday (Oct. 18) for the Pioneers homecoming, defeating Concord, 42-30, in Summersville. GSU is currently in a four-way tie for first place (in the loss column) in the Mountain East Conference.

Pioneers Offense
After a four-touchdown performance against Concord, senior quarterback Anthony Garrett is now 2nd in the league in passing touchdowns with 14 while also ranking 2nd in the conference and 18th nationally in passing yards with 1,779. His 254.1 passing yards per game is good enough for 2nd in the league and his 115 completions is third-best.
 
Jeremiah King had a career day versus the Mountain Lions, totaling 142 yards and two scores to boost his totals up to 642 rushing yards (2nd MEC, 21st NCAA) and seven rushing TDs (T-2nd MEC). King has also carried it a league-leading 147 times and is averaging 91.7 yards per game, which is third-best in the league. Graylan Holland had another productive day last week, pushing his rushing yards on the season to 288 on 52 carries.
 
It has been a balanced attack at receiver for Garrett and the Pioneers, as Naseem Pacheco ranks 6th in the league in receptions (25) while totaling a team-leading 369 yards and two touchdowns. Tariq Meredith (19 catches, 272 yards), Arnav Thornhill (10 catches, 250 yards, 1 TD) and Tariq Miller (16 catches, 236 yards, 3 TD) are all over 200 receiving yards as well. In total, 13 different Pioneers have caught a pass with nine having at least five grabs on the season.
 
Pioneers Defense
Brandon Penn no longer leads the league in tackles but the redshirt senior has 68 (one behind 1st) with 45 being solo stops, which tied for 4th best in the country. Penn also has 1.5 TFL, one interception, one PBU, one blocked field goal and one blocked punt. Sean Scott has been great in the open field this season, notching 57 total tackles with 4.5 TFL and six pass breakups (T-6th MEC). Shary Jefferson leads the team in tackles for loss with 5.0 while recording 44 total tackles and one forced fumble.
 
The secondary for the Pioneers has been all over the place for defensive coordinator JJ Mayer, with GSU notching five interceptions and 29 pass breakups. Kaevon Blanding has six breakups while Elia Jeffry Ofosu has five and Andre Jefferson is up to three on the season. The defensive line is led by Tank Gant (42 tackles, 4.5 TFL, five QB hurries) and Eugene Allen (25 tackles, 4.0 TFL, five QB hurries) to balance out the defensive look for GSU.
 
Pioneers Special Teams
Brody Layman is second in the MEC in field goals, converting on 7-of-8 this season with a long of 30 yards. Zander Watson is second in the league in punting yards at 1,112 with a 59-yarder being his longest and nine downed inside the 20. West Virginia transfer Andrew Phares and true freshman Micah Brown have taken full control of kickoffs as the duo is both averaging over 22 yards per kickoff return.
