Game Preview No. 9 : Pioneer Football Heads South to Battle West Virginia State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Football takes a four-game winning streak and a (4-1) conference record into Saturday's (Nov. 1) matchup at West Virginia State in Institute. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. inside Dickerson Stadium and will be televised on the Mountain East Conference Digital Network.

2025 Season
The Yellow Jackets enter (4-4, 3-2 MEC) after falling on the road to No. 3 West Florida, 55-6, last Saturday (Oct. 25). West Virginia State enjoyed a three-game winning streak at the beginning of the season but have since lost three of their last four contests.

Yellow Jackets Offense
Quarterback Kaleb Jackson has been a dual threat for the Yellow Jackets, totaling 1,714 passing yards (4th MEC) and 13 touchdowns (T-4th MEC) to just five interceptions while rushing for 258 yards and three scores on 66 carries. The rushing attack has featured four Yellow Jackets this season including Jackson, with running back Jojo Restall spearheading the attack with 431 yards (9th MEC) and three touchdowns while averaging 7.0 yards per carry (3rd MEC). Nasean Hill leads the team in carries (68) and rushing touchdowns (5) as the 5-11, 210-pound junior has rushed for 350 yards.
 
The receiving core is highlighted by one of the league's most explosive and best receivers in Amare Ary. The speedy 5-10, 180-pound WR has totaled 808 receiving yards (1st MEC, 3rd NCAA), 43 receptions (1st MEC), six touchdowns (T-1st MEC), 101.0 receiving yards per game (1st MEC, 6th NCAA) and 5.4 receptions per game (1st MEC). Malik Baker II has been a solid No. 2 receiver for WVSU, being tied with Ary for the league lead in receiving TDs with six and having 337 receiving yards on 19 grabs.
 
Yellow Jackets Defense
Marshawn Mankins is the top defender for the Yellow Jackets, racking up 51 total tackles, 4.5 TFLs and one sack thus far. Defensive back Daryl Fletcher is second on the team in tackles with 35 but has recorded two interceptions on the year, which leads WVSU. Keontavius McGrew and Kyeran Garcia have helped lead a solid front seven as the duo have combined for eight tackles for loss.
 
In addition to Minkins' two interceptions, defensive backs Amir Muhammad and Shawn Russ Jr. have been active with their hands, totaling six and five pass breakups, respectively. Russ Jr. and three other Yellow Jackets have also notched an interception on the year but TJ Lomax is the lone Yellow Jacket to force a fumble in 2025.
 
Yellow Jackets Special Teams
Tony Hornbuckle is second in the league in field goals, hitting 8-of-10 with a long of 40 yards this season. Punter Joseph Shrader has been one of the league's best, averaging 39.6 yards per punt, which is third-best in the MEC. Sharder also handles the kickoff duties for West Virginia State, averaging 56.2 yards per kickoff with 10 touchbacks.

2025 Season
The Pioneers are coming off of a thrilling 32-28 win at West Liberty, which was GSU's first victory on the Hilltop since 2017. Glenville State is (5-3, 4-1 MEC) and are winners of their last four after starting the season (1-3).

Pioneers Offense
Senior quarterback Anthony Garrett surpassed 2,000 passing yards last week, just the second MEC QB to do so this season. Garrett's 2,026 passing yards is 2nd in the MEC as well as his 17 touchdowns and 253.3 passing yards per game. He also ranks third in completions with 137. Garrett helped lead the Pioneers to a game-winning drive in the final six minutes of last week's contest, a drive that saw GSU convert on three fourth downs and ended on a Garrett passing TD.
 
Running back Jeremiah King had a career day last week, earning MEC Offensive Co-Player of the Week with 160 yards and one score on 27 carries. So far this season, King has broke out to total 802 rushing yards (2nd MEC, 16th NCAA), eight touchdowns (3rd MEC), 100.3 rushing yards per game (3rd MEC) and a whopping 174 carries (1st MEC). Graylan Holland (59 carries, 306 yards, two touchdowns) is keeping the run game consistent while Micah Brown has put together a strong freshman campaign.
 
Naseem Pacheco has been Garrett's favorite target in 2025, totaling 32 receptions, 430 yards (8th MEC) and two scores in eight games. Though Pacheco leads the team in catches, the love has been spread wide with the GSU receiving core. 13 different Pioneers have caught a pass, with seven having nine or more receptions and nine Pioneers recording over 100 receiving yards. Tariq Miller, Kordell Lewis and Koraun Perdue have all caught a team-leading three touchdowns while Amari Colon-Brown and Jeremiah King have snagged two.
 
Pioneers Defense
Brandon Penn has big from his safety spot in 2025, leading the Pioneers with 75 total tackles (3rd MEC), 2.5 TFL, one interception, one pass breakup and an impressive four blocked kicks. Sean Scott (60 tackles), Shary Jefferson (51 tackles), Braden Boggs (49 tackles) and Tank Gant (47 tackles) have all notched 5.5 TFL each while Kalon Curry (5.0 TFL) and Eugene Allen (4.0 TFL) have applied a supplement of pressure all season.
 
Five different Pioneers have recorded an interception with Kaevon Blanding emerging as one the league's best defensive freshman with a team-leading seven pass breakups. Elia Ofosu has went back-and-forth from his safety and cornerback positions, totaling five pass breakups from the two posts. After Jamar Grimball's forced fumble last week, five different Pioneers have also poked the ball free this season.
 
Pioneers Special Teams
Brody Layman leads the league in field goals after going three-for-four last week at West Liberty. The junior is now 10-for-12 on the season, which leads the conference in field goals made and FG% (83.3%). Special teams had a big day at WLU, with punter Zander Watson and kicker Johann Villasenor putting the ball in the right spots for the coverage teams to do their job for a clean sheet.
