Home Away From Home portion of their schedule tomorrow (Nov. 8) as the Pioneers welcome Wheeling to Parkersburg South's Erickson All-Sports Facility for Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and will be streaming on the Mountain East Conference Digital Network. The contest is presented by United Bank.

The Cardinals come into week 10 at (5-4, 4-2 MEC) as WU is tied with Glenville State and West Virginia State for 3
rd in the conference. Wheeling opened the year with a two-game losing streak before ponying up three wins in a row. Since then, the Cardinals have flip-flopped wins and losses on a weekly basis.

Head Coach
Zac Bruney is in his seventh season as head coach of the Wheeling Football program. Bruney has led the Cardinals to three-consecutive .500 or better seasons, including a (6-5, 5-4 MEC) finish in 2024. Three seasons ago, the Bruney-led Cardinals recorded their first and only seven-win campaign against DII competition.
Cardinals Offense
After an early season injury, Ade Olanegan is back behind center for the Cardinals as the 6-1, 201-pound QB has thrown for 1,144 yards and 11 touchdowns with just three interceptions. Olanegan's favorite target has been Jordan Kaiser, who has brought in 22 passes for 403 yards and three scores while ranking 4
th in the MEC in average yards per catch at 18.3. Colin Oberdick is currently first on the team in receptions with 28 while being tied with Kaiser for the team-lead in TDs (3) and 317 yards of receiving.
Wheeling features three running backs in their system, but it's Steven Mitchell who has been their No. 1 guy thus far. The 5-foot-6, Wheeling native has ran for 512 yards (8
th MEC) and five TDs on 125 carries (6
th MEC). Dawaun Green (64 carries, 288 yards, 1 TD) and O'Marion Taylor (36 carries, 217 yards, 2 TDs) have provided different looks in the backfield for Wheeling.
Cardinals Defense
The league's leading tackler, Jefferson Bretanys-Desca, heads the Cardinals defense as the 6-foot-2, 235-pound middle linebacker out of Canada currently has 91 tackles (12
th NCAA), 4.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks, two interceptions and one pass breakup. Defensive linemen Dylan Newman and Dion McIntosh have been creating problems up front all season long, with Newman recording 8.5 TFL (4
th MEC) and McIntosh notching 7.0 TFL (T-7
th MEC). Awwal Osinuga has rented out space in the backfield out of his linebacker spot, logging a team-leading three sacks with 5.0 TFL.
Leonard Sherrod III ranks 2
nd in the conference in interceptions with four while being top 15 in pass breakups with six. In total, six Cardinals have at least one interception. James Walker IV is one of five Cardinals who have forced a fumble, but Walker leads the team with two and also leads the team in pass breakups with nine.
Cardinals Special Teams
Wheeling's Connor Fitzpatrick handles the kickoff and field goal duties, averaging 55.5 yards per kickoff with five touchbacks. He's 8-for-15 on field goals with a long of 48 yards. Three of his kicks have been blocked. Punter Brett Jackson has a long of 51 yards this season and has landed 10 punts inside the 20-yardline.

2025 Season
The Pioneers had their four-game winning streak snapped last week in a 52-28 defeat at West Virginia State. GSU comes into the new week at (5-4, 4-2 MEC) and are (2-2) at "home" this season.

Senior QB
Anthony Garrett is coming off of a 326-yard and three-touchdown performance at WVSU, boosting his totals to 2,352 yards (2
nd MEC, 13
th NCAA), 19 touchdowns (3
rd MEC), 156 completions (3
rd MEC) and 261.3 passing yards per game (2
nd MEC). Former Fairmont State Fighting Falcon
Naseem Pacheco is up to 519 yards (6
th MEC) and three TDs on 35 catches (4
th MEC) to lead the Pioneer receiving core.
Tariq Miller has played in just seven games due to injury but has quickly bolstered his stats, putting together 405 yards, five touchdowns (T-7
th MEC) and 26 receptions.
Tariq Meredith (23 catches, 308 yards),
Arnav Thornhill (11 catches, 266 yards, 1 TD) and
Kordell Lewis (14 catches, 214 yards, 3 TD) have been reliable as well.
Clarksburg native
Jeremiah King has been one of the league's best running backs all season long, totaling 848 yards (3
rd MEC), nine rushing touchdowns (3
rd MEC) and 184 rushes (1
st MEC). The redshirt sophomore is also third in the league in rushing yards per game at 94.2. King has been accompanied by Morgan State transfer
Graylan Holland, who is up to 320 yards and two scores on 63 carries. Quarterback
Anthony Garrett has not been afraid to run the ball either, with the agile quarterback rushing for 232 yards and two scores this season.
Pioneers Defense
Redshirt senior
Brandon Penn will be in his hometown on Saturday as the 5-foot-11, 190-pound defensive back has totaled 85 tackles (3
rd MEC), 2.5 TFL, one sack, one interception, one pass breakup and four blocked kicks in 2025.
Tank Gant has continued to add onto his impressive junior campaign, as the elusive edge rusher is up to 50 tackles, a team-leading 6.5 TFL (T-11
th MEC), one forced fumble and seven QB hurries.
Sean Scott,
Shary Jefferson and
Braden Boggs have all accounted for 5.5 TFL each while Georgia Military College transfer
Kalon Curry is at 5.0 TFL.
The backend of the defense is led by
Kaevon Blanding (seven pass breakups), Scott (six pass breakups) and
Elia Ofosu (five pass breakups, one interception).
Andre Jefferson has been solid thus far, totaling three pass breakups. In total, five Pioneers have notched a forced fumble and an interception.
Pioneers Special Teams
Johann Villasenor is handling the kickoff duties, averaged nearly 46 yards per kickoff and two touchbacks. Brady Layman is at the top of the league in field goals, hitting 10-of-12 with a long of 32 yards.
Zander Watson is averaging 35.6 yards per punt and has landed nine inside the 20 with a long of nearly 60 yards at 59.
