Lady Pioneers Fall to Top-Seeded Fairmont State in MEC Championship Game

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Glenville State Women's Basketball team had their miraculous MEC Tournament run come to an end earlier today as the Lady Pioneers fell to top-seeded Fairmont State, 79-65, in the MEC Tournament Championship.

The Falcons opened the championship game with a 9-1 run but GSU would rebuttal with a 9-2 run late in the stanza to trail by two with a minute left to play. After the Falcons hit a three to increase their lead to by five, the Lady Pioneers ended the quarter with a quick 4-0 run to go into the second quarter down one point. The Lady Pioneers gained some momentum and eventually tied the game up but FSU got their lead back the very next possession. However, a strong finish to the half by Glenville State propelled them a three-point advantage going into the locker room.

The Lady Pioneers came out for the second half looking to gain an edge as they would go on a 6-0 run to grow their lead. GSU answered back to everything the Falcons did until the three-minute mark when the Falcons would start to heat up. The Falcons went on a15-2 run to end the quarter as they gained a seven-point lead going into the deciding quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Falcons continued their hot streak as they increased their advantage on the Lady Pioneers to as much as 16 points. Glenville State tried everything to get back into this game but would inevitably fall short as they lost to the Falcons, 79-65.

Fairmont State
The Falcons were powered by both Alyss Deangelo (21 points) and Leslie Huffman (20 points). Jalen Gibbs was all over the ball with 13 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks and one steal. Madeli Huffman led the team in assists with seven.

Glenville State
The Lady Pioneers were led in scoring by Dream Cherry and Tynasi Bunting, who both had 17 points apiece. Bunting also led GSU in rebounds with nine while Jade Salters managed to grab eight boards. Three different Lady Pioneers led the team in assists with two assists each. On defense, Nwando Okigbo had Glenville State's solo block while three players tied for the most steals in the game with two each.
